A Cup of Tea

Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen (Chan/Son).

Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor's cup full, and then kept on pouring.

The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. "It is overfull. No more will go in."

"Like the cup," Nan-in said, "you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen [Buddhism] unless you first empty your cup?"











Muddy Road

Tanzan and Ekido were once traveling together down a muddy road. A heavy rain was still falling.

Coming around a bend, they met a lovely girl in a silk kjmono and sash, unable to cross the intersection.

"Come on, girl," said Tanzan at once. Lifting her in his arms, he carried her over the mud.

Ekido did not speak again until that night when they reached a lodging temple. Then he no longer could restrain himself. "We monks don't go near females," he told Tanzan, "especially not young and lovely ones. It is dangerous. Why did you do that?"

"I left the girl there," said Tanzan. "Are you still carrying her?"






The Giver Should Be Thankful


While Seisetsu was the master of Engaku in Kamakura, he required larger quarters, since those in which he was teaching were overcrowded. Umezu Seibei a merchant of Edo, decided to donate five hundred pieces of gold called ryo toward the contruction of a more commodious school. This money he brought to the teacher.

Seisetsu said: "All right. I will take it."

Umezu gave Seisetsu the sack of gold, but he was dissatisfied with the attitude of the teacher. One might live a whole year on three ryo, and the merchant had not even been thanked for five hundred."

"In the sack are five hundred ryo," hinted Umezu.

"You told me that before," replied Seisetsu.

"Even if I am a wealthy merchant, five hundred ryo is a lot of money," said Umezu.

"Do you want me to thank you for it?" asked Seisetsu.

"You ought to," replied Umezu.

"Why should I?" inquired Seisetsu. "The giver should be thankful."

好多年前当我读到这些隽永的小禅故事的时候,忍不住手痒把它们译成中文,后来收入我的译著《织禅--禅的小故事》（晨星出版社，台北，1992）一书里。贴在这里博大家一笑吧！

来到一个弯处，他们看到一个穿丝绸和服的可爱少女，走不过去。
「来吧，姑娘，」丹山马上说，抱起她，把她带过泥坑。
直到夜里他们抵达投宿的寺庙，役道没讲过一句话。然后，他再也忍不住了。「我
们当和尚的要远女色，」他告诉丹山，「特别是年青漂亮的，那太危险了。你为什么那样做？」
「我老早把那女孩子放下了，」丹山说，「你还带著她？」

There are many anecdotes about the valor, before death, of the masters, the following being well known:

When a rebel army took over a Korean town, all fled the Zen temple except the Abbot. The rebel general burst into the temple, and was incensed to find that the master refused to greet him, let alone receive him as a conqueror.

"Don't you know," shouted the general, "that you are looking at one who can run you through without batting an eye?"

"And you," said the Abbot, "are looking at one who can be run through without batting an eye!"

The general's scowl turned into a smile. He bowed low and left the temple.
