[温暖的水獸]

〈拼圖〉，顏艾琳
以此詩弔念九二一地震的受難者：

那一夜，在客廳玩拼圖
時間越來越晚，版圖還那麼大，
我想，等中秋節時
姊姊回家，再一起完成。

是誰在搖我？
我已經長大了，而且睡著
是誰將我搖入更深沉的眠睡中？

我睡了很久，
天一直沒亮；
但我聽到姊姊在門外喊
「弟弟，你在哪裡？」

然後我夢見，
自己和爸爸變成兩片拼圖，
躺在扭曲變形的圖框外，
沒有人將我們，
放回「家」的缺塊中。

English Translation

(I dedicate my English Translation to the victims of the May 12th earthquake)


The Revised Version:

That night, I put together a jigsaw puzzle in the living room.
The hour was getting late, and most of it lay unfinished.
I thought that during the Moon Festival,
When Elder Sister came home, we’d complete it together.

Who was cradling me?
I was grown up, and had fallen asleep.
Who was rocking me into a deep, deep dream?

I slept for a long time;
The dawn had not yet come.
But I heard Elder Sister crying out,
"Little Brother, where are you?”

Then in my dream I saw
Father and I turn into two pieces of puzzle
And lie outside the twistedly deformed frame.
No one could put us back again
In the space for the missing piece called “Home.”

That night, I played the puzzle game in the living room.
The hour was getting late, and most of the picture was not finished.
I thought that on the Moon Festival,
When Elder Sister came home, we’d complete it together.

Who was cradling me?
I was grown up, and fell asleep.
Who was cradling me into a deep, deep dream?

I slept for a long time;
The dawn had not come.
But I heard elder sister crying out,
"Little Brother, where are you?”

Then in my dream I saw
Father and I turn into two pieces of puzzle
And lay outside a broken picture frame.
No one could ever put us back
In the missing piece called “Home” again.

Eric's suggestion of 'rock' for the translation of 搖 is a very good word choice. Not only it is accurate but also it can be related to the earthquake - the earth rocks. Good one!

By the way, I just wonder why you don't choose Jigsaw Puzzle for the title of your translation. Jigsaw puzzle is the English name for the puzzle game of which you mention in your piece.
