Another Spring
after Tz’u poet Li Ch’ing Chao (1084-1115)

Winter is someone grown
needlessly thin.
Standing by the window
as the light fades
I slide a bangle from
my bony wrist,
but I’m slow
to shed all my ornaments,
hesitate to close the shutter.
The old tree outside hums
with early, drunken bees.
Plum blossoms decorate
a withered twig.

Fox Spirit’s Lament

At dawn I bring a banana leaf basket
to the Nine Officer Temple,
remove my heart
which is too full of water,
and place it on the altar.
The Sing Song women who worship here
love warriors, pray for the power
of ghosts, to float over a lover’s garden
unafraid of the wind.

I pray to become real,
write poems about clouds and rain
with the white tip of my tail.
Only at dusk can I leave
my orange pelt in the trapper’s noose.
It is easier to wander
without my heart. Its drum beat
of yearning won’t follow me
into my officer’s bed.
Warriors do not rest well.
After the downpour I take
only the smallest sips
of his sleeping breaths
so he won’t recall his dreams.

White Birds
After Tang poet, courtesan Yu Xuanj

The white wings
of my letters
labour between us.
So far for a bird to travel
through cloud-shredding wind.

When I think of your mountain winter,
Father, I put on another robe.
You harden like the trees,
freezing so the sap
barely flows to your heart.
Will your fingers be too stiff
to read my mail?
Perhaps it only feeds your fire.

No birds return to the south
this spring, but willows
cast fresh lines in the river.
I have fished
in this wandering current
for many years.
The trout rise from deep water.
Your answer does not arrive.

We are glad to have Heather Roberts Cadsby join us and she will read Kate's poem Another Spring for Li Ch’ing Chao... which reminds me of my poem: For Li Qing Zhao (published first in Rice Pager, then on Eastlit in Thailand.

I also have a poem about "Fox Love" which is in my book "Inhaling the Silence".

Just got Tammy Ho's message and congratulations on her first collection of poetry:

http://chameleonpress.com/hulahooping/

Tammy Ho Lai-Ming's first collection has been fifteen years "between pen and press". The poems, cross-cultural and personal, paint a broad canvas from love to language, and family to politics. Hula Hooping is a valuable addition to the growing corpus of Hong Kong poetry in English.

"Tammy Ho's first book of poems marks the heart-felt, enigmatic, sassy, unapologetically socially engaged voice of an emergent generation that Hong Kong has long waited for." ~ Shirley Geok-lin Lim
Commonwealth Poetry Prize and American Books Awards winner
Research Professor, University of California, Santa Barbara

"These poems are allusive and elusive. Goethe, Chuang Tzu, Nabokov, the wind, text messages, money. Yet there is a tenderness and sometimes stunning directness." ~ Lucas Klein
Lucien Stryk Translation Prize winner, 2015 PEN Translation Prize judge.

DRAGON BOAT RACING
by William Marr

if those drumbeats are the heartbeats
of the dragons
then the wooden paddles must be their feet

the drums, banging louder and louder
the hearts, pounding faster and faster
the pace of the feet, tapping on the water
becomes quicker and more graceful

and the little hearts on the shores too
boom boom
rise and fall
boom boom
rise and fall

O fathers! Please hold on to the little hands
of your children
not sure when some of them
will soar to the sky
following the roar of a dragon

NIGHT CRUISE ON RIVER TUO,
DRAGON-BOAT FESTIVAL, 2002

by William Marr

While our memory is still flickering and drifting
with the water lamps in the stream of time
our eyes are already filled with fog
like the chilly surface of tonight’s river

The drumbeats pounding our chests all day
are finally silent
waves stirred up by the thousands of paddles
have also calmed

Under the hazy starlight
a couple of mandarin ducks
are chattering and necking

don’t forget tonight

DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

by William Marr

Routinely
dragon boats
dart out
one after another
Routinely
dragon boats
drag themselves back
one after another

They have been searching
large rivers, small waterways
lakes, ponds, and even ditches
They have been searching
the stream of time
from that instant of splash
that occurred over two thousand years ago
to the foreseeable future
There is just no trace of him

Perhaps
we should
follow the river into the ocean
Perhaps
we don't really know
what does Qu Yuan look like

The Chinese Man
by Laurence Hutchman

In the afternoon
the old Chinese man
kneels in a garden.

The sunlight flickers,
a golden tapestry on the red wall.

Jazz from an old film echoes;
a broken leaf falls.

He feels for a single nail,
sets it on the wood,
hammers straight as thought.

Resolute he is,
the golden tapestry on the red wall.

Poem by Laurence Hatchman

Poem by Laurence Hutchman
translated by Anna Yin

爵士乐从老电影传出;
