一旦诗般美丽的语言
被用来引爆
新仇旧恨的
炮弹
人类需要
另一种全新的
弃绝音节的
缄默
面对这荒谬绝伦的世界
他们其实也
无话可说
注：在波士尼亚战火里生长的小孩，有不少因心灵受创而失去说话能力。
而一位引发战火的塞尔维亚人领袖，据说还是位诗人呢。
SILENCE
when poetic language
is used to ignite
hatred
and bombs
it's time to abandon
words
syllables
and sounds
to this absurd world
they really have nothing
to say
Note: Many children born and raised in the warring Bosnia
were so traumatized that they lost the ability to speak.
Ironically, one of the Serbian leaders was said to be a poet. |

A sharp, socially conscious poem.
Yes, the real problem is the misuse of language. The Greek Socrates once wrote: "The misuse of language induces evil in the soul." But, I just wonder whether the abandonment of poetic language can solve the problem.
I once wrote a review essay on 1984 and it’s entitled Newspeak: A Vision of the World. The aim of my essay is to show how language can be used politically to deceive and manipulate people and to argue that language becomes a thought-control weapon. Further, I suggest that Orwell’s conception of language is in line with contemporary studies in linguistics and sheds its light in understanding the abusive use of language in the political arena today.
The essay ends with the following passage:
"Armed with his view about language as a mechanism of control, maybe we can think clearly, which is a necessary first step toward cultural and political regeneration. Then we can identify the real message behind all the spin twisting into and going around in the world of politics, big business, advertising and public relations; eventually, we can probably bring about some improvement in the way we use language today."
Radovan Karadzic was an award-winning poet. In the Winter 2005 issue of The Michigan Journal of International Law, lawyer and poet Jay Surdukowski attempted to make a case for the genocidal intent expressed in the poems of Radovan Karadzic.
What follows is his poem entitled Goodbye Assassins:
Goodbye, assassins, the boundaries between
The worlds are trampled
Instead of the heart, a hornet drones in vain.
History turned its back on us.
What should one shoot at?
Like an octopus, the age hides its vertebra,
And the winter approaches
With white drifts.
