Reading, Writing and Life on the Page
Life Writing, Writing Life: The Journey to Healing
In order to work through the inner turmoil caused by my displacement and to reach out to the larger society around me, I made up my mind to write only in English two years ago. Time has passed by me, swiftly and silently, and I have done nothing important, except for so-called “life writing,” which at least helps keep my mind calm and focused.
However, one big question is left unanswered: what have I actually created? All I do is to work through my inner turmoil, reflections on where I am, where I have come from, and, too often, why I am here. I take those little details of my immigrant life and add a little of something else: I move backward and forward in time, and narrate between moods and events in which there are many rubbings-out and puttings-in. I make my life a text, a revisionist literary work. I am writing life. It is hard for it is more than just writing lines.
For me, life writing is like a journey of moving out, coming in, going back, moving on, and staying put over the spacio-tempo territory of my encounters with the inner self, significant others, and life events. These encounters might be relevant to me at the time of my writing, yet eventually be nothing important in retrospect.
I often think life writing is an outcry of pain in textual forms. For the time being, it is a way of sorting out my tangled feelings, expressing my wounded self, and thus, hopefully, healing. To write about the difficulties I've encountered since my emigration to Canada is to revisit tormenting experiences and journey back to the darkest tunnels of memory. Not only are courage and determination needed but also faith -- faith that the need for this literary exploration will pass and illumination will come at last. Until then, I keep writing in the hope that I can come to terms with my past and present. Yet I must admit that I also keep writing in the vain hope that I will be read. The two are inextricably linked. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Very interesting idea. Life writing is not just writing life and more than writing lines. _________________ My throat knew thirst before the structure

The road is very narrow. Even we don't ask promise, we still want kinds of achievement.
Each stage is hard, each needs more energy.
That is what I feel. _________________ ---------------------

Yes, well said. A heartfelt statement.
For me now, being a writer is not a state of competence, or achievement, or content at which one has arrived and where one has stayed. Whatever the labour of any piece of writing, whatever its challenges and satisfactions, Time has taken me away from it. With time passing, I feel mocked by what I have done; it seems to belong to a time of rigour, now past for good. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

I like this idea of writing as healing.
Have you read Signifying Pain: Constructing and Healing the Self through Writing? In her The Introduction, Judith Harris defines clearly the theme of the book: "Writing about painful experiences defends against world-dissolving powers that often accompany trauma, depression, and mourning." _________________ If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all. |

Yes, I’ve read her book, a deeply personal yet universal book. Signifying Pain is one of a growing number of books that explore the parallels between the "talking cure" and the "writing cure."
Written from a psychoanalytic perspective, Signifying Pain focuses the use of writing as a therapeutic form of healing past emotions. As she notes it, "The belief that art helps to heal the artist and others is an ancient one. It puts us back together in a different way." _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |
