Dylan Thomas (27 October 1914 – 9 November 1953) was a Welsh poet. He is regarded by many as one of the 20th century's most influential poets. Apart from writing poems, Thomas also wrote short stories and scripts for film and radio, with the latter medium, especially, performed by Thomas himself. His public readings, particularly in America, won him great acclaim. May 1953, saw the World Premiere of Thomas' play, Under Milk Wood. The play itself was a great triumph, and because of this, Thomas was asked to work on the libretto of an opera for the composer, Igor Stravinsky. It was also around this time that Thomas' health rapidly began to deteriorate as a result of his drinking; he was warned by his doctor to give up alcohol but he carried on regardless. Just a few days after he celebrated his 39th birthday, he collapsed and slipped into a coma in his room at the Hotel Chelsea, New York. Dylan Thomas died 4 days later.

不要溫和地走入那良夜,
老年人應該燃燒並對著日暮呼喊;
怒斥、怒斥那光明的微滅。

盡管聰明人臨終時知道黑暗正確,
因為他們的話語沒有迸出閃電,
他們並不溫和地走入那良夜。

好人,當最後一浪湧過,高呼他們脆弱的功業
本可以很光輝地起舞於綠色的海灣,
也怒斥、怒斥那光明的微滅。

狂放的人抓住並歌唱過太陽的飛越,
意識到,太晚了,他們曾使它在途中哀嘆,
他們也並不溫和地走入那良夜。

沉穩的人,臨死時用眩目的視覺
看到瞎眼也能像流星般閃耀而欣歡,
也怒斥、怒斥那光明的微滅。

而您呀,我的父親,身處高度的悲切,

Just read the first one and found this line a little weird.

(Bury the dead for fear that they walk to the grave ln labour.)
(埋葬死者以免她們在分娩中步向墳地。)

How do you know they are 她們, I am not sure here "ln labour" is 分娩 . . .

I like his this poem more.

POEM IN OCTOBER

It was my thirtieth year to heaven
Woke to my hearing from harbour and neighbour wood
And the mussel pooled and the heron
Priested shore
The morning beckon
With water praying and call of seagull and rook
And the knock of sailing boats on the webbed wall
Myself to set foot
That second
In the still sleeping town and set forth.

My birthday began with the water-
Birds and the birds of the winged trees flying my name
Above the farms and the white horses
And I rose
In a rainy autumn
And walked abroad in shower of all my days
High tide and the heron dived when I took the road
Over the border
And the gates
Of the town closed as the town awoke.

A springful of larks in a rolling
Cloud and the roadside bushes brimming with whistling
Blackbirds and the sun of October
Summery
On the hill's shoulder,
Here were fond climates and sweet singers suddenly
Come in the morning where I wandered and listened
To the rain wringing
Wind blow cold
In the wood faraway under me.

Pale rain over the dwindling harbour
And over the sea wet church the size of a snail
With its horns through mist and the castle
Brown as owls
But all the gardens
Of spring and summer were blooming in the tall tales
Beyond the border and under the lark full cloud.
There could I marvel
My birthday
Away but the weather turned around.

It turned away from the blithe country
And down the other air and the blue altered sky

In my view, Twenty-Four Years is a demanding poem because ordinary clues related to the speaker in the poem are lacking. The reader who searches for semantic links may see two possible connections. The first link is a connection between doorway-journey-strut-direction-elementary town-advance, referring to a journey of death because someone is “sewing a shroud” for this journey and a shroud links up with grave-bury the dead. The second link is a connection between labour-groin-meat-eating sun, making references to birth. The interconnection between these two semantic links infers a well-publicized concept: life as a journey from birth to death.

By the way, in your translation, the verse line, "In the final direction of the elementary town," is translated as "朝著小鎮最後的方向."

I think this translation doesn't catch the connotative meaning of the original line.

You're probably right. It was hard for me to find a good phrase that doesn't sound unnatural, finally I decided to use a simple term, as in elementary school.

I tried to find some information about the first poem and failed.

I am really puzzled. With Eric's view, I am still hard to connect it. Any more discussion?

不容易。韵,看似也都压上了。仅有一点,还在琢磨。

如果是death of the light,用熄滅較恰當。微滅是衰敗滅絕的意思,強調是過程。既然是rage,當然朗誦時要像發火一樣啦!

Interesting discussion about Thomas' Twenty-Four Years.

This poem is one of his few birthday poems, an autobiographic summary of his book, Adventures in the Skin Trade.

We discussed Twenty-Four Years poem.

Thank you, Anna. This means “陣痛” is better than “分娩”,because “陣痛” implies more about pain than childbirth. On the other hand, the text "in labour" literally can mean the efforts of childbirth. No matter what people read into the line, I think a good strategy is to preserve the text for as many meanings as possible.
