White Picket Fence
Although your face
was always partially blocked
For years it seems
I've known you
from casual glimpses
through gaps in the fence
in the backyard _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul

White Picket Fence
For years it seems
I’ve known you
Through casual glimpses
Into the tall fence
In the backyard
Though the view of your face
Is partially blocked |
This little poem makes me ponder:
引用: | it seems
I’ve known you |
'seems' implies that 'actually, I don't quite know you'.
Because of 'glimpses', and 'the view ... is partially blocked'.
Then what caused this obstacle? White Picket Fence . And it is white.
The metaphor 'white picket fence' and the unidentified personal pronoun 'you' lead the reader to imagine and fill in the vacuum.
Enjoyed it. |

Yes, the whiteness of the North American dream.
you read my poem very well.
I try to take up Toni Morrison's challenge to "avert critical gaze from the racial object to the racial subject ... from the described and imagined to the describers and imaginers;" hence, I am able to make subtle racism a "white people's problem." _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

This comment reminds me of the describtion of "Banana" for the Chinese who were born in Canada. When I talked with a Chinese girl who was born here, she told me it was true. She accepted people called her "Banana", even her mom called her the same. So sometimes it is hard to define the racism upon the word being used.
Here the poem raised the problem of knowing each other, the title "white Picket fence" hinted you were blocked forcefully. But I am interested in knowing more...
Do you mind if I bring this to my next poetry workshop to ask western poets' comments? _________________

Generally speaking, “banana” is a disparaging phrase mainly used by the Chinese to criticize assimilated Chinese-Canadians or Chinese-Americans deemed to be yellow on the outside, white on the inside.
I feel sorry for her about the way she has been treated.

I'm glad I interpreted it right for I was afraid I may have read too much into it.
I agree with Eric's comment on 'banana', a disparaging word. |

In the realm of middle class American suburban life, happiness and social achievement are closely intertwined. A dream home portrayed in pop culture and thus imagined by the Americans is located in an affluent location with its well watered front lawn and massifs of full-fledged roses framed by a white-picked fence, which is a recurring theme in David Lynch’s movies.
What follows is an excerpt from Taste of Suburbia Arrives in the South Bronx by Philip Shenon:
''I want white,'' Mr. Logue said. ''I don't know,'' the architect said. ''A white fence would seem to be a good target for graffiti artists.'' ''I want white,'' Mr Logue said. ''A white picket fence. It has that suburban flavor.'' ''What about the graffiti?'' the architect asked. ''I'm not worried,'' Mr. Logue said. ''What is the American dream? A home of your own with a white picket fence. I want white.''
Do you see that? the South Bronx. _________________ I'm Champagne,

It looks like there is always a poem written about an image. It is amazing. |

Another verse line from Robert Frost' Poem entitled Mending Wall:
He says again, "Good fences make good neighbors."
What follows is an edited version of a reply from my friend Florence:
"Thank you for the poem -- I will read it again and give it some more thought, but it's very powerful although it's very spare. The image that springs to mind is my own memories of looking through a fence and wondering who lived in that house -- so close and yet so inaccessible. Perhaps a partial view and not a full view. But at the same time, the fence protected me --- suppose there's danger lurking about. And why the backyard and not the front? The white fence, so neatly set up and decorative and yet can send such a dark message to all: "these are my boundaries" -- you cross this great divide and you are in MY turf, MY rules.
Remember Robert Frost's poem on fences... he ends off with something like good fences make good neighbors...
we could get into a very interesting discussion on fences -- literal and metaphorical sometime..." _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Thanks. I printed your poem and I read it to them. They thought the title very good.
They suggested.

Thank you for reading my poem and for your friends' comments.
I have a question: why do they need to capitalize the first letters of "Picket Fence" in line 4? _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

I enjoyed reading Eric's poem very much. 星子's suggested version is more compact and thus more effective. I don't think you need to capitalize the first letters of "picket fence" in the poem though.
Even without the racial connotation of WHITE, I think this poem is still very powerful in depicting the sad situation of the alienated society in today's world. |

Thank you for reading and commenting on my poem. It's very helpful.
This poem is written for my critique of the "white flight" or "white withdrawal" phenomenon, which I personally have experienced for the past two years. The dominant colour of the picket fences in Canada is yellow, and I deliberately use the white colour to stress the more subtle aspects of Canadian racism because the image of the “white picket fence” has inscribed in the North American psyche.

Yes, the “white picket fence” of North American suburbia. It means distance, it means safety; thus it means alienation. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |
