I think the Socratic answer to the question raised by the speaker is: the examination of oneself and one’s manner of living is the only good life and only cause of happiness. The happiness thus achieved cannot be stolen away by any means.
To my best knowledge, the U.S.A. is the only nation enshrining “the pursuit of happiness” in its Constitution. The reality on this Promised Land of Happiness is the consumption of a half of psychiatric drugs produced worldwide by its population only made up of around 5 percent of humanity on earth.
In her recent book entitled The Happiness Myth, Jennifer Michael Hecht, author of award-winning books of philosophy, history, and poetry, discusses the history of the idea of happiness, and various ways that people, across time and space, have sought happiness. By looking at the human history critically, Hecht stirs up new ways of thinking to re-imagine the way American society, in its pursuit of happiness, uses happiness drugs, money and shopping, news and vigils, refusal of exercise, and television culture . _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Ah, it is getting philosophical and deeper…
…
Let me drop a word of advice for believers of my faith.
To enjoy life’s immensity, you do not need many things.
By Ryokan
Tr. Noburuki Yuasa
Why do people never stop raising the same question even with so many wise words by sages?
Thanks eric for the info on the current value, pursuit of happiness. |

Yes, to enjoy life’s immensity, you do not need many things.
For every desire you fill, another one always follows just on its heels.
I like the Zen poetry of Taigu Ryokan nicknamed Great Fool.
Ryokan had wrote many inspiring poems, one of which speaks to the issue of living in a consumerist society in terms of Buddhist teaching.
Without desire everything is sufficient.
With seeking myriad things are impoverished.
Plain vegetables can soothe hunger.
A patched robe is enough to cover this bent old body.
Alone I hike with a deer.
Cheerfully I sing with village children.
The stream beneath the cliff cleanses my ears;
The pine on the mountain top fits my heart. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

I am glad you also like Zen poetry, eric.
Here is another poem by this Great Fool:
In the still night by the vacant window,
wrapped in monk's robe I sit in meditation,
navel and nostrils lined up straight,
ears paired to the slope of the shoulders.
Window whitens--the moon comes up;
rain's stopped, but drops go on dripping.
Wonderful--the mood of this moment--
distant, vast, known to me only!
What a content state of mind!
I also like the directness, clarity in his poem.

for the sake of happiness---
happiness is really up to yourself...
Lately I listened to the audiobook " how to stop worry and begin to live..."
I like this kind of attitude.
so why the void? _________________

so why the void? |
That is the question.
A paradox?
If it is that simple, life, death, happiness... won't be questioned from generation to generation and over and over again.
Honestly, enlightenment seems a million "light" years away from me.

Without desire everything is sufficient.
I agree.
why the void? In some point, we even don't know ourselves, so how do we know what we need, and what really happiness is to us? _________________
