blessing the boats

may the tide
that is entering even now
the lip of our understanding
carry you out
beyond the face of fear
may you kiss
the wind then turn from it
certain that it will
love your back may you
open your eyes to water
water waving forever
and may you in your innocence
sail through this to that


The instructions for that exercise are:
1. Write your own lines in between the printed lines of the poem. They should be
inspired by the poem, and by each line, but don't have to make absolute sense in the
original poem (ie. they are not new consecutive lines for that poem).
2. Then take all your own lines, and work them into a poem. You might want to
change the order of the lines, add some, delete some, etc. Surprise yourself! (of
course, you can try this technique with any poem).

As we mentioned, translation is a good exercise, too, if you know another language.
And, if you have a "writing buddy" or work in a group, you can sometimes exchange
lists of words -- any 5 words will do -- to use in a poem.
