Son, you have never met children
in Africa, in Rwanda
those children with
bare feet, skinny limbs
and bony faces

you have never heard
rain penetrating their roofs,
wind blowing
through broken windows

you have never tasted
muddy water
dry pale food
raw reed roots

you have never felt
their hungry stomach
thirsty throat
cracked hands

you have never worked
under the hot sun,
at the lonely shelter
in the wild field

yet you scream
it is not fair--
your toys are not new,
your school is not fun
your clothes are not trendy
your food is not tasty

Son, open your eyes
see what they see,
lend an ear
hear what they hear
no food to feed them,
no shoes for their little feet,
no toys belong to them
no school at all
only the dust, the smoky air
the rain and the mosque.

Silence is left over there,
in another world
they have no choice,
no freedom,
no promising future…
