Language fabricates intimates:
The very alphabet pledges incipient pleasantries—
to rollick in letters,
to kiss without kissing….

(Note the glib efficacy of the tongue
at lying;
or to indulge injurious prophesying;
or, wielding a battering-ram limerick,
to hurl a potentate off a pedestal.)

Keats, I come to you as a back-page spectre,
a wanton haunt,
my unidentifiable shadow
crossing over your lines,
to find in Thee—
beyond the grave’s beguiling caricature—
arborescent headstone—
Thy iconic Glamour
that cancels the grave’s purgatorial visibility.

Thou art never as marginal as a corpse,
but sprout poems like gilded lilies—
opaque ink jetting white sunlight—
la dolce vita of Liberty—
what flowers from your acreage—
as vast as the (Roman) alphabet….

we've bitten into a peach.
But now at the same time
it splits--half for each.
Our "then" is inside its "now,"
its halved pit unfleshed--

what was refreshed.
Two happinesses unfold
from one joy, folioed.
In a hotel room
our moment lies
with its ode inside,

with a hinge.

Picking Apples

Not Northern Spies,
Nor Granny Smiths. Yours
Plump Russets
Rouged and weighty.
Or whatever.

When I learned to pick apples, two-handed
In the Niagara orchards,
Weighing them in my palms,
The old orchardman showed me.
Letting gravity do its trick.
Lifting them away.

The ripe and wondrous falling.
Their stems curled, a small leaf
Fluttering like a sprouted wing.
Lowering them into the canvas
Cradled on his chest.

And I had no idea then
He was talking about you,
Or about love.

Being Human

I am reading Rumi
reading Tu Fu
and thinking of being human

last summer
Marty and I
slept in the farmhouse loft
under French heaven near Vitteaux
and we lay in our separate cots
like boys at camp
laughing, talking silly
making fun of everyone
we were mostly ourselves, middle aged men
with the window open
to starlight
and the evening breath of the fields

look up at the slant of ceiling
the slant of beams
this room was built
for dreaming
and we were giddy as lads
with happy lives, not
old Tu Fu, his sadness settled
like shadows, like rivers
like cold stones of winter
and the bitter darkness of long nights
and the lonesome insomnia
of small hours
like the mystical beauty of death and dying
and the inescapable anger of the soul

our hearts refusing the silence
with a lovely slowing exhalation
as we each become
more pensive in
the loosening limbs of slumber
relaxing our hands like unfurled leaves
and pressing our faces to linen
meanwhile great rivers of the earth
the Tigres and Euphrates
the Yangtse
the Amazon of my father’s last days
flow on
and what would I buy
from the famous floating markets of Bangkok

I would purchase the rains of remember
I would purchase the stars of recall
and what to preserve in a poem
but the drenching of darkness with light. .

如漫长而苦涩的黑夜，
失眠孤寂；
以及那些神秘莫测的死亡

I am reading Rumi

Night tiptoes in,
The moon shines,
Over the Pacific Ocean
The sound of the crashing waves echo,
From hand drums and bell drums,
And beyond.
The blade of the Er-hu
Is in the opened cut,
Playing
The broken strings of the
Ancient harp.
