BEIJING – China celebrated itself today: its progress, prestige and – above all – its power.

With 5,000 marching soldiers, a 2,000-member military band and 180,000 ordinary citizens in supporting roles, China marked 60 years of Communist Party rule in high spirits Thursday.

From bayonets to ballistic missiles everything, it seemed, shone in what state media said was the single largest display of military might in the nation's history.

And from high atop the podium on Tiananmen Gate – where Mao Zedong himself proclaimed the People's Republic of China 60 years ago today – a line-up of the nation's leaders, led by President Hu Jintao, looked down approvingly.

It was, without a doubt, President Hu's legacy moment.

Unlike other members of the Politburo who dressed in business suits, he distinguished himself by wearing a charcoal grey Mao suit.

"Today a socialist China ... towers majestically in the East," he told a spirited crowd lining the Avenue of Eternal Peace.

For security and control purposes the government limited the number of those attending to fewer than 200,000 – telling citizens to stay home and watch it on television.

The parade itself was really a made-for-TV spectacle, tightly choreographed and scripted and beamed across the nation to China's 1.3 billion population.

"It's a great parade," 25-year-old beautician, Zhang Min beamed, as she watched it from her hair salon in Beijing's central business district. "The People's Armed Police especially – with their long legs and perfectly straight backs. They're just so full of morale."

The parade featured the People's Liberation Army, the People's Armed Police, and the Second Artillery, China's special nuclear force.

The march past was a major morale boost for the nation – the very point of a parade – and was followed by a civilian portion that celebrated China's social and technological advances.

Festivities began shortly after 10 a.m. with 60 rounds booming from cannons near Tiananmen Square each marking one year since the Communist forces declared victory over Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists in 1949.

The tight mechanized movements of marching soldiers clearly conveyed the message of a well-oiled and ready machine: highly disciplined, polished and professional.

President Hu performed a drive-past troop review in a black, open-topped, Chinese-built limousine.

He shouted, "Comrades, you work so hard!" The soldiers replied, "Serve the people!"

Massive portraits of China's four leaders since the founding of the republic – Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin and President Hu – were held high and marched past the podium in sequence to begin the parade.

As they were, their recorded voices were broadcast, uttering some of their most memorable words to the nation.

In Mao's case, it was the announcement establishing the republic.

As the parade continued, 80,000 school children carrying mass-formation flash cards, flashed giant slogans to the crowd that read, "Follow the Party's Command," "Loyalty to the Party," and "Socialism is Good
