Living for the moment (Contemporary Haibun)

Live one day at a time; each day has enough trouble of its own. Do not grieve over things past, for they are gone. Let bygones be bygones. Do not worry about things impending, for you have no control of them. Tomorrow will worry itself. Live for the present moment and make the most use of it.

Today, fully-lived, will make
every yesterday a memory of happiness
and each tomorrow a vision of hope.

This is a piece of didactic writing with a touch of Zen Buddhism.

It means this piece is morally instructive -- seize the day!

Champagne,

I have to agree with Fanfan's comment. Honestly, if it is a message, it's fine; as a literary work, however, it lacks a poetic touch. (So you see, good or bad, it all depends.) And also, the haiku(?) at the end looks a bit long to my eye. Am I too harsh? Sorry.

Thanks for the read and sharing your thoughts on “didactic writing.”

Although a lot of ancient literary works produced in Western and Eastern cultures infused with didactic elements, generally speaking, since the rise of Romanticism and Aestheticism in the 19th century, didactic writing has been viewed negatively as foreign to true art. The term didacticism usually pejoratively refers to the use of literary means to a doctrinal end. However, in my view, the boundaries of didactic literature are unstable and open to dispute. More importantly, didactic writing can be done from an imaginative perspective, such as Christie Malry's Own Double Entry by B. S. Johnson's.

The prominent Chinese poet Ai Qing had written a lot of short poems in the form of aphorism, the majority of which are didactic.

A good point. Thanks for your valuable comments.

Feel free to criticize my poems. I'm a man with a thick face and a big heart.

Sorry about my reply which reads like a piece of didactic writing.

Good to know what kind of man you are.

I suppose didactic or preachy sometimes is unavoidable.

Good points.

I think, sometimes, we need a well-crafted, thought-provoking piece of didactic writing.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on "living in and for the moment."
