竹里館 王維
獨坐幽篁裏,彈琴復長嘯。
深林人不知,明月來相照。
English Translation: Bamboo-Midst Cottage
Sitting alone in reclusive bamboo dark,
I play the zither, gravely whistling.
Deep in forest, no one can know;
Only the bright moon and I face each other. _________________ Don't imitate me;
it's as boring
as the two halves of a melon. |

I've also translated this poem, not sure if I've posted it here:
Lodge Among the Bamboos
I sit alone by the serene bamboos,
Strumming my zither and whistling.
No one knows I'm in the deep woods,
Only the moon comes watching. _________________ 我的blog:

譯詩 (I found it online)
獨自坐在幽深的竹叢中,
彈彈琴又仰天長嘯。
沒有人知道我在這幽深的密林中,
只有一輪明月來相伴。

In my view, the lines marked above are not accurate enough to express the tone of its Chinese version of the poem.
I like fanfan's translation. |

_________________ 我的blog:

I think 幽 probably means 幽暗 because this meaning will create a contrast with "brightness" revealed in the concluding line (幽篁 vs. 明月). _________________ Don't imitate me;

yes, I concur.
I like your concluding line.
fanfan 写到: |

What follows is William P. Coleman's translation:
The Bamboo Grove
Alone I sit, dark, among bamboos;
I pluck my qín, or whistle Taoist breathing.
Deep in forest, no one can know:
the bright moon visits me and shines. _________________ 舌頭那匹温暖的水獸 馴養地在小小的水族箱中 蠕動

Because of the moon, the bamboo woods might not be that dark after all. Considering the poet's relaxed mood, I don't think it's a good idea to emphasize darkness. _________________ 我的blog:

I agree with Edgar, since I think dark is a little negative. _________________ ---------------------

What follows is Pauline Yu's translation:
Bamboo Lodge translated by Pauline Yu:
Alone I sit amid the dark bamboo
Play the zither and whistle loud again.
In the deep wood men do not know
The bright moon comes to shine on me.

Bamboo Lodge translated by Pauline Yu:
Alone I sit amid the dark bamboo
Play the zither and whistle loud again.
Line 1: This alludes to a poem entitled 'The Mountain Spirit' (shan Gui) the ninth of the Nine Songs in the Songs of Chu. There the speaker grieves over the failure of his lady (the spirit) to arrive, and he waits in sorrowful solitude in a dense and gloomy bamboo grove.
Line 2: A "whistle" (xiao) was probably a combination of Taoist breathing techniques and whistling which was said to express feelings and was associated with harmonizing with nature and achieving immortality. The tradition of the xiao began the Jin dynasty and has always been linked with Taoism. By the Tang there were apparently 12 different types of xiao. _________________ Don't imitate me;
