江雪,柳宗元
千山鳥飛絕, 萬徑人蹤滅。
孤舟簑笠翁, 獨釣寒江雪。
English Translation
River Snow by Liu Zongyuan
A thousand mountains
Where no birds fly.
Ten thousand paths
Where human footprints are no more.
A solitary boat,
An old man in reed cloak, bamboo hat –
Fishing alone
In the cold river snow. _________________ Don't imitate me;

River Snow is Liu Zongyuan’s most famous poem. The scene unrolls like a Chinese painting, revealing one layer at a time: silent mountains – empty paths – solitary boat – old man fishing – snowy river. _________________ Don't imitate me;

A Chinese critic once wrote, "The twenty words (Chinese words) make twenty layers, yet the poem is all of one piece."
More importantly, hidden in the poem is Liu's view of himself as a lonely outcast, frozen out in a cold world. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Thanks for your comments.
Yes, River Snow is a great poem which has inspired many later poems and paintings throughout centuries. _________________ Don't imitate me;

In my opinion, "in reed cloak, bamboot hat --" would be better. _________________ If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all. |

Good suggestion.
Here is Witter Bynner's Translation:
RIVER-SNOW
A hundred mountains and no bird,
A thousand paths without a footprint;
A little boat, a bamboo cloak,
An old man fishing in the cold river-snow. _________________ Don't imitate me;
it's as boring
as the two halves of a melon. |

Yes, well said.
The poem is known for a calmness that somehow rings with isolation and futility.
What follows is another translation I found online:
A thousand hills, but no birds in flight,
Ten thousand paths, with no person's tracks.
A lonely boat, a straw-hatted old man,
Fishing alone in the cold river snow. _________________ My throat knew thirst before the structure

Good point.
Yes, this poem suggests a ineffable solitude. In my view, there is a Zen Buddhist element to the poem. His old man reminds me of Wallace Stevens's snow man, who is armed with a “mind of winter”:
For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is. _________________ Don't imitate me;

Good translation.
What follows is my poetic response growing out of my fishing experience:
The dark forest
where no birds fly by
The winding paths
where human tracks are gone
A boad floating on the lake
A man in raincoat fishing alone _________________ East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet. |

Thanks for reading and your poetic response.
What follows is another translation by Burton Watson:
From a thousand hills, bird flights have vanished;
one ten thousand paths, human traces wiped out:
lone boat, an old man in straw cap and hat,
fishing alone in the cold river snow. _________________ Don't imitate me;
