After great pain, a formal feeling comes by Emily Dickinson

After great pain, a formal feeling comes--
The Nerves sit ceremonious, like Tombs--
The stiff Heart questions was it He, that bore,
And Yesterday, or Centuries before?

The Feet, mechanical, go round--
Of Ground, or Air, or Ought--
A Wooden way
Regardless grown,
A Quartz contentment, like a stone--

This is the Hour of Lead--
Remembered, if outlived,
As Freezing persons recollect the Snow--
First--Chill--then Stupor--then the letting go--

"Ought" may stand for obligations, that is, all the things we ought to do.

I think "義務般站立" would be a better translation.

First--Chill--then Stupor--then the letting go--
先是寒冷──昏麻──然後隨它而去

最后一行的 letting go 也许译成"撒手"或"放手"较好。“随它而去”可能会被误以为同它一起走了,而不是被冻僵在原处。

Yes. A good suggestion.

"Ought" may be understood as "naught," which means nonexistence or nothingness.

Thanks for your comments.

I will think about your suggestions. Maybe the key to the right translation of this touchy word lies in the understanding of the context in which it is situated.

Yes, I agree with you completely.

In stanza two, the feet symbolizes going about daily routines. The speaker does this in a ‘mechanical” and a “wooden” way, just going through the motions of life and not really feeling what she is doing. Therefore, I think “ought” read as “obligations” would be better in the context in which it is situated.

Its meaning is more close to 漠然.

Any suggestion about how to translate "a formal feeling?"

It’s a well-crafted poem which traces the numbness experienced after some terrible event(s).

In my view, Dickinson is truly a master poet of human sorrow.

Dickinson brilliantly recreates the experienced numbness.

This poem has no speaker; hence, the sufferer is dehumanized and treated as an object.

Yes.

Although I personally view this poem as a confessional poem, strictly speaking, Dickinson does not describe the gender of the sufferer portrayed in the poem; moreover, she portrays the sufferer in terms of body parts – nerves, heart, and feet. She skillfully uses the technique of depersonalization for showing the experienced numbness – emotional deadness.
