English, I Anguish Co-written by ericcoliu, An Echo to Lost in Translation by ericcoliu
English, I Anguish
You are not able to connect
emotions to words, to feel
the weight of their syllables.
Without emotional vocabulary
everything becomes elusion, confusion
and the fear of things
you needn’t be afraid of.
You are not able to weave
words into sentences, to free
your thoughts from inertia.
Words have become the isolated cries
of a wandering soul
clutching desperately at your heart.
Note:
English, I Anguish is appropriated from a verse line in My Foreign Anguish by ericcoliu. _________________ Don't imitate me;

Lost in Translation
Every time when I hear myself speak in English, I just hate it. It is not my human voice but rather a mechanically translated one. It is not simply that my ears hate my mouth, or that my mouth tries to irritate my ears. It is because, in the strain of translating a Chinese word into its English equivalent, or vice versa, the spontaneity and natural quality of my speech are lost. In the toiling process of translation, I try hard to impose my learning, will, and intellect on my spoken English in an effort to turn my speech into an oral facade of my hidden self. I know that I am failing, for I feel that I'm falling out of the tightly-knit fabric of emotional vocabulary into the weightless net of the linguistic signifiers of a foreign language. Stuck in this dark and chaotic situation, I have become a stranger to myself, a person who lives on the edge between the world of his own and that of the foreigners he has just joined. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Yes, it's because you're lost to yourself.

Yes, well said.
The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.

Thanks for the reading and sharing.
Share with you a quote from Eva Hoffman, who wrote a wonderful book, Lost in Translation, a book that reflects on immigrant experience explicitly in terms of a movement back and forth between two possible selves, associated with two distinct cultural and linguistic life-models:
When I speak Polish now, it is infiltrated, permeated, and inflected with English in my head. Each language modifies the other, crossbreeds with it, fertilizes it. Each language makes the other relative. Like everybody, I am the sum of my languages." _________________ Don't imitate me;

Thank you for your well thought-out quote.
I just wonder what identities people construct for themselves when they use different languages in particular ways. |

Good question. I think you can find your answer satisfactorily in I Am My Language: Discourses of Women and Children in the Borderlands by Norma González.
"In this book, Norma González uses language as a window on the multiple levels of identity construction in children—as well as on the complexities of life in the borderlands—to explore language practices and discourse patterns of Mexican-origin mothers and the language socialization of their children. She shows how the unique discourses that result from the interplay of two cultures shape perceptions of self and community, and how they influence the ways in which children learn and families engage with their children’s schools." _________________ Don't imitate me;

Is that true? I have my own dialects, then I learned to speak and write in Mandarin, and I stayed in Shanghai for 6 year, so I can speak Shanghai dialect, now I have to speak and write in English. So I have 4 lives.
But I am good at none of these languages, I'd rather have one perfect life, not 4 miserable lives. _________________ 达则兼济天下,雅能独善其身。 |

I think it's true if you're really into a new language, which means a different life world.
It's amazing you've learned four languages. I hope everything will go well with you eventually. Thanks for sharing your thought. _________________ Don't imitate me;
