Edna St. Vincent Millay was an American poet and playwright. She was the first female recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Her most famous poem might be a 1920 poem titled First Fig:

My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--
It gives a lovely light!

Thomas Hardy once said that America had two great attractions: the skyscraper and the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay.
