Personal Reflection:

Sounds (“My steps”), metaphor (“mist”), words (Here) can bridge the gap between imagination and reality, or at least attempt to reconcile such dichotomies for a moment. The “steps” and “mist” constitute an inseparable reality in the poem, which is itself a second reality. Here grows out of Octavio Paz’s poetic instinct that is his imagination's response to an exigent reality, a psychological tug-of-war between home and exile. It is a succinct poem about time and space, bringing the reader to the idea of being at home and exile at the same time.
