what could they have known of deserts
forever loveless moonscapes
dark breathless emptiness
that gas could fill
the void of your heart’s deep hunger
infuse black space with stillness
paternal hands, finally
to carry you home
like tiny ants, a flower
cupped back on itself
like a collapsed star

what could they have known of endless light
rising in the relentless sameness of days
you foresaw as sepulchers, too numerous to bear

you cast out lover
you cold planet

in your infinite need they envisioned demons
in your broken pieces, a jigsawed dream

you were too beautiful
like Vincent
who saw haloes
where others saw only dross
blind to the essence
through the diaphanous veil of things
you knew the melancholy of bloom and rust
you sought love like air
like truth, like God
dead to the world
instead, their blunted eyes
rearranged your body
into a mere assembly of lips
impressionistic hands, limbs

so many parts enshrouded in skin
ignited once then discarded like ash
in search of replacements
leaving you forever to your gaping self
‘an outcast on a cold star, enclosed in a wall of glass’
banished from their blind, worthless grace
as you sought appeasement
into the bony arms of annihilation
