Rich and Poor

F. Scott Fitzgerald once said to Ernest Hemingway, "The rich are different from you and me."

Hemingway replied calmly, smiling,"Yes, they have more money."

I wonder what made this seemingly trivial exchange of the idea about rich and poor between two prominent American writers well-known in the American literary history.

I have read Danish Ashm 's "Distinction"

The book is very shart and profound.

If I have time, I will type a few here later.

A good question!

To Hemingway, the rich aren't really different from you and me. Fitzgerald's mistake, in Hemingway's view, was that he mythologized the rich, treating them as if they were a different kind of human species.

Do you mean that according to Fitzgerald, what made the rich different was not what they had, but they really were, “a special race?”

Yes, I think so.

To Hemingway, the difference – between what people had and what they were – seemed obvious.

Thank you all for commenting on my piece.

The whole issue regarding rich and poor was triggered by my reading of a lot of media coverage on the growing gap between rich and poor in the USA.

I don't know whether or not Fitzgerald mythologized the rich, but one thing for sure is that he and hemingway believed that the fundamental difference ran deeper than the question of how much money the rich had.

Yes, well said. This pressing issue should prompt us to re-think:what kind of socio-politico-economic environmens turn the rich into a different species.

FYI:
Economic figures show that in 2005, the wealthiest 0.1 percent of the country’s population had nearly as much income as all 150 million Americans who make up the lower economic half of the country. Of each dollar people earned in 2005, the top ten percent got 48.5 cents, the highest percentage since 1929, just before the Great Depression.

In his new book entitled Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense and Stick You with the Bill, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Cay Johnston reveals how government subsidies and new regulations have quietly funneled money from the poor and the middle class to the rich and politically connected.

For more detailed information on his book, you can read the full-text transcript, posted at http://www.democracynow.org/2008/1/18/free_lunch_how_the_wealthiest_americans , of the interview with David Cay Johnston by Democracy! Now host Amy Goodman.

How exactly to translate "million"? 10,000, or 100,000?

After reading Hemingway's The Sun also Rises, I found that no one cares about Robert Cohn's money but every one feels the force of the fact: he is "a race conscious ... like kike".
