In those days St. Anthony persuaded many to embrace the solitary life. And thus it happened in the end: there are diverse groups of Christians that renounced marriage and possessions. Within a short period of time, cells arose in the deep mountains, and the desert was colonized by the monks, who were imbued with a revolutionary ardour and enrolled themselves for the citizenship in Heaven.

One day a young desert monk was tormented by temptation, and he decided to leave his cell and move to a place closer to other monks. As he put on his sandals, he saw another monk not far away who seemed to start to put on his sandals. He yelled out, "Who are you?" "I am your ego," came the reply. A silence fell between them. A silence full of weight and loss.

This needs to re-read.

Interesting.

Desert silence or the "sounds" of desert silence?

A provocative story to challenge the reclusive life of hermits.

The old ego has became the cave guard in your story.

The hope of escaping away from the old ego by changing one's place, roles, or partners has been dashed.

It's a manifestation of the ego, the agent that does not allow the bundle of desires and needs in us to come to resolution.

Yes, well said.

It's precisely how it shores up in us such a profound dependency on this world.

Is that the main reason for "a silence full of weight and loss?"

Yes, it's an ongoing tug-of-war between egoistic desires and spiritual longings.

In a real-life account of the temptations of St. Anthony, "I am Satan," came the reply.

What follows is an excerpt from an article, Temptations of St. Anthony which appeared in TIME MAGAZINE, Monday, Mar. 25, 1946:

"In the 3rd Century, Saint Anthony the Egyptian renounced all worldly joys, went off into the Arabian Desert to live the life of a hermit. He had a terrible time of it. Often he would glance up from his prayers to see Satan hovering before him in the gloom of his abandoned fort. And Satan was hard to recognize; usually he looked like the things Anthony missed most."

The Temptation of Saint Anthony is the title of Gustave Flaubert's 1874 classic, which calls up not only the great problems of knowledge, but the real riddles of life.
