[Champagne]

Dead Drunk

This story TRULY happened in the Hunan province of China five hundred years ago, during what was the period of the Ming Dynasty.

Hwang and Lao were two newly emerging scholars in Taoism, and they showed a great interest not only in the academic study of Taoism but also in practising the Taoist way of living.

One day, they ran into a wandering Taoist monk and have a mind-lifting conversation with him. They felt happy and treated this monk to a delicious meal. From then, he came to visit them frequently; moreover, he always gave them a hint to treat him to a good meal after their engaging discussion over a variety of pressing issues facing contemporary Taoist scholars.

Over a period of several weeks, Lao gradually became irritated by this discrepancy between thinking and doing that the monk had demonstrated. The monk seemed to be able to read his mind, and he voluntarily offered both of them a meal at his hermitage to pay back their hospitality to him.

The next day, when Hwang and Lao went there, they surprisingly found a fabulous meal ready for them in a larger room. They were dined and wined happily. Hwang and Lao were not good at drinking; after a while, they were seized by drunkenness. At this moment, two girls were ordered by the monk to dance and entertain them. They were beside themselves with joy. At that moment, Lao found out how wonderfully Taoist practitioners could enjoy a good life. Elated from drinking, he grabbed the hand of one dancing girl near to him, and he dragged her off to a couch at one end of the room. Hwang seemed to be similarly intoxicated from wine and food, and he shared the bed with the other girl.

When morning came, Hwang woke up, and, scarily and speechlessly, found that he was sleeping on a rotten plank in an open coffin. Across over from him in the open field was Lao, who was crushed to death by a big stone. There was no Taoist hermitage nearby -- just a country graveyard.

I lately googled "Poetry Movie" and found "The Tao of Poetry".



American writer and poet, Howard McCord, said in the movie "The Tao of Poetry"
"Life as a poet is a very curious thing in our culture. . .We honor
poets, but we don't pay them very much. And we honor them and don't
read them very much.. . .At times I think you can be a little
frustrated. . .it's not appreciated but at the same time it was what
you were destined to do." He speaks clearly about the role of the
poet in post modern late 20th century America as well as early 21st
century America.

I sent this quotation out to western poets for their thoughts.
