The bear is too fond of honey,
eating one whole jug after another
'til its belly bursts into pieces.
My six-year old son,
heart purer than his eyes,
believes in the rescue
with threads binding each crack.
The oak tree in our yard
is the same age as him.
This autumn, leaves fall early.
I listen mutely--
to the falling, fallen…
The bear may still
continue its feast;
the tree and I sigh in vain.
A howling wind whispers
without stopping.
