A Guide to Writing Haiku

You ask me about syllables…
Well, don’t worry.
Have you seen Nature counting them
when it presents its being?
The truth lies -
as what it is, authentic and crisp.
See, rain falls,
leaves and lilies shiver…
Do they tell you how many syllables?
And are they sad?
They just shiver… in rains.
So do you.
Yet it is good to add a turn or contrast -

rain falls -
lilies shiver…
a pond in a cupped palm

Get it? The ordinary
can become extraordinary,
and leave it larger to ponder on…
Here is a sheet,
let your pen ink it
as if you walk on a snowy day,
your footprints stay.
Some tiny paw-prints might be ahead,
make us see them too.
You don’t need a whole landscape
or a full story;
but there must be a moment,
a moment that we too
walk with you through your brief unfolding,
a light flashing beyond.

while writing my proposal for a civic poetry project: Haiku Walking Tour/Postcard Poems as Mississauga's Inaugural Poet Laureate (The project's purposes:
1. Connect residents with Nature environment physically and reflectively.
2. Learn how to write haiku and edit haiku and promote local poets.
3. Appreciate their surroundings and have pride in their city.
4. Create in the future a visual city poetry map)
...
