Beside the Funeral Home

Richard Greene

Twice a month, I watch special delivery
Of modish coffins for customers anxious
Not to be caught dead in the ordinary

Or to neglect the last public decencies
And thus send parent, aunt or cousin abroad
Again with no mark of comfort or success.

The undertaker’s under-men gravely load
Each empty coffin onto a folding cart
And then walk it from the alley to be stow

Behind a show-room where any broken heart
Costs twelve grand and death looks like a Pontiac,
Chrome -detailed and rust-proofed in every part.

But once cigarettes are stubbed on the sidewalk
And a monk in saffron robe has struck the gong
The cortege is led out by the Cadillac.

Cars reach slowly into traffic and are gone,
A sad departure for these new arrivals,
From a funeral home that calls itself “Wing On.”

Silver Bridge

You remember seeing the Danforth bridge—
strung with threads—
an angel harp with you inside it
like an astounded moth
in a spider's web,
or a bead in a dream catcher.

You travel inside this threaded instrument
on your way to violin lessons
like you might be Jonah
inspecting the whale's intercostals,
or Noah's offspring
revisiting the ribs of the arc.

You ponder the workmanship
of this half-mile of elaborate lines,
taut on the frets of the bridge,
and recall a Buddhist poem
about a musician who spent his life
stringing and un-stringing his lute,

But never played.

And you realize that this weave of silver filaments,
this enticing spun silk
glinting in the September sunlight

Is a trap, a cage, a publicly-funded skein

To prevent you
from leaping to your death.

Vanishing Cream
In memory of Amy Winehouse

At Wevill's house one desert night
as I lay reading at the window screen,
a moth flew into my lit candle
and fell burning like a torch song.

By the time I snuffed the flame.
wondering if any art was worth
a life—even a dumb insect's—
only the wings' eyes remained.

I watched other moths, less talented,
dance and beat themselves helpless
against the metal mesh, their flutters
the sound of an old film projector

running silent movies, unaccompanied,
the movements of faces overplayed,
each pancaked to reflect a light
shine through them to the future.

My grandmother would remove her face
each night before she went to sleep
with a cream that made her ghostly,
letting the day vanish as if a miracle—

the same way I thought nature sang
when I woke at dawn to uneasy steps,
my face still pressed against the screen
and a doe's eyes staring back at me.

回忆Amy Winehouse
