Happy Birthday
Today you are fourteen, taller than me
and the tree we planted together in our yard.
A year later, you will top your daddy and other trees.
You have stepped into the teenage now -
a stage beginning to search for an identity,
a stage frightening many parents, I hope not us.

Remember, all these years, you are always a gift to us,
a caring and happy soul to others.
We have many good memories together;
we also have ups and downs on the journey.
Sometimes you joke you want to leave us,
and I joke you could have a different mom
who never forgets your lunchbox,
who can provide a proper birthday party…
but you always cry out: No.

I admit I was once a mischievous daughter
and gradually understood what parents meant
I am grateful for what we have now,
- especially the gift of you.

I admit I am a loud and less-attentive mom
who enjoys bragging about many of your talents…
whenever that is the case,
you always remind me to be humble.
You are such a gentle spirit.

So today for your birthday on my facebook
where I seldom say happy birthday to anyone,
I want to say to you, my dearest son, Happy Birthday.

I know you won’t read it now -
on this very special day you are still on training,
and there is no party, but you know love
is what we can always give,
the great and priceless gift.
