The bees were
The trees were
The daffodils were
Why happy?
The man asked his wife
The kids asked their mother
The fishermen asked the river
The farmers asked their land

I didn’t ask
Yet saw the birds soaring
the bees jazzing
the trees whispering
the daffodils blooming
but that was long ago

why happy?
The birds ask the man who caught them
The bees ask the workers who spread pesticide
The trees ask the lumbers who chop them
The daffodil ask the kids who stamp them

Now I ask you, my friend
the isolated happy face passes along
email to email, games into games
hanging on Facebook
so sad, so silent
