MISSISSAUGA COMMUNITY IS INVITED TO DELVE INTO THE WORLD OF ARTS AT CULTURE DAYS!
MUSICAL SHAKERS, DRUM CIRCLES, TRADITIONAL CANDOMBE LATIN RHYTHMS & MORE


MISSISSAUGA, ON– The Mississauga Arts Council (MAC) is inviting the whole Mississauga community to delve into the exhilarating world of arts at this upcoming weekend’s national Culture Days, taking place on Saturday, September 29, 2012. Join the Mississauga Arts Council for an unforgettable day of free activities with two simultaneous events.

MAC is thrilled to present a free afternoon of fun from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Visual Arts Mississauga (4170 Riverwood Park Lane). Join us in the barn (yeah, you heard us...in the barn!) for an earthy day of fun including a percussion making workshop. Join us as we make musical shakers from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Bring the kids to this hands-on collaborative workshop that includes shaker decoration and visual arts elements. Afterwards, grab your shaker and join MAC’s first-ever interactive Drum Circle, led by professional percussionist John LaRosa (in the photo to the left). Learn traditional Candombe Latin rhythms by LaRosa who hails from Uruguay. If you own a drum, bring it along! Join us as we learn to drum to our own rhythm at this hands-on event led by one of the G.T.A.’s top up-and-coming percussionists.

Culture Days will continue on a high note as Canada’s Smooth Jazz Award-winning saxophonist Carson Freeman hosts an Open Mic. Local performers and poets are welcome to come out and perform at this chill, laid-back and community event. This is the place to gain confidence, support and test out your new material to a conscious crowd. All artists looking to perform must call the MAC office at 905-615-4278 in order to perform.

The excitement continues with a myriad of exciting events happening at the Wholistic Family Fair, taking place throughout the whole day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mississauga Novotel (3670 Hurontario St). Natural skin care and beauty products, tea sampling, palm reading, free acupuncture, and complimentary allergy testing are just some of the experiences you can expect! MAC Executive Director, Linda Thomas is a strong believer of natural health. “If you are interested in learning more about and experiencing alternative health options all the while supporting the artistic programming of the Mississauga Arts Council, I encourage you to visit the Wholistic Family Health Fair this Saturday. All donated proceeds from the door are eligible for a tax receipt and will support the arts in Mississauga.”

While benefiting from these services, enjoy the sweet sounds of internationally renowned harpist, Moira Nelson performing from 10:30 a.m. to noon, musician Kyle Fraser on guitar from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and eclectic dance performances by the Tense Image, an upcoming popping/animation dance crew performing at 11:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. So don’t hesitate! Grab your kids and family and come out and indulge in these free events!
