Death in the Air --book review
This was an intriguing story which began when a trapeze master fell and whispered two words to a nearby boy, Sherlock: “Silence… me…” after his injury. Sherlock had lost his mother lately and blamed himself for causing his mother’s death. He eventually helped the detective, John, to catch his mother’s murderer, but still could not forgive himself. So he left his home and went to the city where his father had been hired as a Palace gate keeper. There Sherlock witnessed the Trapeze accident and determined to find out if it was a murder. First he suspected the young couple (“the Eagle” and “the Owl”), then “the Swallow”, the youngest member of the flying crew, since he saw him lingering along the bar which was cut and broken that caused the flying master fall.
A young thief gang leader tipped him off to the fact that “the Swallow” was from Brixton where the worst gang hung out. During Sherlock’s investigation, “the Swallow” had saved him from the falling; So Sherlock was not sure who the real suspect was. He continued his investigation. The next day when he read the news and found another crime happened in the Palace, a burglary, he thought about a possible connection between these two incidents. With the help of his employer and “the Swallow”, he finally tracked down the criminals and lead the policemen to catch the gang.
This story is seamed with many tiny but sensible clues, and this is combined real emotion and conflicts among each character. It had an attractive beginning and a satisfying ending. In between, there are many sub-plots and details which enchanted the reader and help him to continue reading. I think it is a wonderful book and worthy of reading; its language is clear and well organized. I hope you all enjoy it.
