As Souster progresses in his poetic career, use of opposites to create an artistic balance continues. But, at least in his better poems, this balance becomes more subtly implied through the patterns of imagery rather than the more direct statements in the two poems previously discussed. “The Candy Floss of the Milkweed”, first published in 1959, provides a good example of this later approach:

Softer, more delicate
than the skin of any girl
who ever walked up Yonge Street,
the candy floss of the milkweed
carried by the wind
to the farthest corners
of the valley
(valley dead
and dying with autumn)

a first snow
already lightly falling,
but carrying life
not death
wherever it touches
however carelessly the earth.

(Colour of the Times, p. 72)

Contrasts exist even in the title of this poem, as candy floss is man-made, artificial, and short-lived, while milkweed fluff, in spite of its superficial physical resemblance, natural, and, as a seed, a harbinger of life. The first association of the milkweed fluff are with the skin of a girl, another image suggesting vitality, although this is immediately countered by the introduction of the regularity of a city street. In the second stanza the milkweed is asociated with the wind and valley, both apparently natural, vital forces, although it appears that the locale of the poem could be either the city or the country. If the city, the valley would not be a natural valley, but the unnatural chasm of a skyscraper-lined street. This urban valley would be twice-dead — once because it is in the city, and again because it is dying with the autumn of the year. In the third stanza the milkweed is associated with snow, an image generally linked with death in Souster’s poetry. Yet because it is a seed it carries the potentiality for life wherever it touches the earth. Yet if the poem is set in the city, the life it brings will find no encouragement. So opposites flow out, one from the other, multiplying in complexity with the progress of the poem.

Ten Elephants on Yonge Street (1965)

a fresh appreciation of Souster's role: he's a connector of Canadian literature, pulling together disparate poets, helping them know each other and meet their tiny audience. He's a one-man, no-budget Canada Council. His literary magazines were always self-financed and often self-printed, on a mimeograph machine. The Contact Press books were published from his basement, including The Circle Game, which won Atwood the 1966 governor general's award and established her reputation in poetry. The same year, Souster brought out New Wave Canada, a collection of young poets, including Michael Ondaatje. (On Wednesday night, Ondaatje's eloquent letter of tribute to Souster--"He brought many of us to the surface and we owe him everything"--was read out by Gatenby.) In that same period, Souster helped found the League of Canadian Poets.

In 1956 Louis Dudek, introducing a selection of Souster's work, mentioned one of his main subjects, "his sordid and wondrous city, Toronto." Souster writes eloquently on nature, on war, and most passionately on love, his wife being his muse. But many of us think of him first as the poet-in-chief of Toronto. A city comes to life only after writers have invented it, and Souster has been among Toronto's inventors, adding a layer of poetic reality to the abstractions of asphalt, glass, and brick. His Toronto poems work like photographs in the Henri Cartier-Bresson tradition, inscribing small pieces of space and time on the memory, catching a moment as it flies. Whatever Raymond Souster touches, he leaves richer.

"The wonderful enigma of Raymond Souster"
by Robert Fulford
(Globe and Mail, June 24, 1998)

One more poem, "Artificial Hand, War Veteran," should be quoted:

Hand the colour
of half-dead leaves
Hand slightly clenched
as if pain could be lingering

Useless hand
price of our wars
badge of our deceit...

I was invited to attend PurdyFest this summer. We plan to camp at the Zen Garden with other poets. I will also do a Poetry Presentation for Raymond Stouster. So now I need to do some research on it.

Any suggestions, please email me....

为什么庄周梦蝶, 而不是梦到其他动物?
读了 Raymond Souster's poem, 突然觉得找到了答案

No scream engine
leaves a madman's whistle behind it
a show-off trail of vapour

instead,
Noiselessly, effortlessly it fluttered
on its aimless, summer-easy way

----the aimless, easy way is like th Tao... right?

I rehearsed my presentation and it got very good feedback. I will try to polish it for July's event.

On July 30, we will camp on the Zen River Garden... Since Jason plays a lot of games this year, we haven't booked any camp site.

So I am glad we are invited to camp for free and enjoy the event as well.
