AA---

now more than 180 years old, Blake's poem, but one of the four or five poems that many can still quote.

William Blake

The Tiger

TIGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

you remove God from the poem, move closer to the poem in the modern way that we seem to prefer. good for the pom.

i like the intimacy, the light shines brightly, darkly, on the narrator even more than the films main character, the tiger.

good.

the film, the poem, asks us to consider---can something wild and hunted be saved by a brave gesture of love---even a sacraficial act?

afterall, what is the Christian story --- that He loved mankind so much that he gave his only begotten son to die ...etc.

here, the speaker offers herself as "bait." a high price for love.

the poem kept my interest and surprised me at the end. Clear narrative, hard to go too far wrong when telling a story.

do you know frank stockton's famous short story, the lady or the tiger?

http://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stori ... Tige.shtml

an accused man must open a door, the one to the left or the one to the right---behind one, a fierce tiger, behind the other the woman of his dreams.

in the arena he must decide which door to open---the king's daughter makes a slight gesture to the right---no one sees the gesture but the accused man in the arena. now, the question, does the young woman act from love or from jealousy, is her information true and life saving even at the price of her own happiness.

the accused man walks to the door on the right---is it the lady, or the tiger?

Hi Bernie,

Thank you for analyzing this poem. You read it very well.
I intend to write it in three ways. You have showed one way to read it which is the price of love.

another way is from the endangered animal point of view, they want to survive but trapped by the hunters. (Here the speaker is another animal, tiger or not tiger)

And the third way is to put our feet in Mr. Tiger Wood's shoes. He is the victim of affair which tries to trap him inside. Smile In this way, I hope it brings the humor.

Hope it works.

Anna
