怀旧
西出阳关无故人
更何况绕了大半个地球
今夜的天空
挤满了
大大小小的人造卫星
却没有一个
载得起
我要给你的信息
NOSTALGIA
It's said there'll be no old friends
west of Yang Gate
I am now more than half the world away
tonight's sky is crowded
with man-made satellites
big and small
but I can't find even one
that can carry my messages
to you

A poetic antithesis to David Harvey's claim -- "time-space compression." I like this socially conscious poem.

阳关 is a border pass (关) called Yang (阳).
Here are two English translations:
Version I A SONG AT WEICHENG
A morning-rain has settled the dust in Weicheng;
Willows are green again in the tavern dooryard....
Wait till we empty one more cup --
West of Yang Gate there'll be no old friends.
Version II Seeing Off Yuan the Second on a Mission to Anxi
At Weicheng morning rain has dampened light dust,
By the hostel, the willows are all fresh and green.
I urge my friend to drink a last cup of wine,
West of Yang Pass, there will be no friends. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

谢谢ERIC的引诗。我想把阳关译成Yang Gate 要比 Yang Pass 好得多。我本来也想用Yang Gate ,后来决定用the border gate Yang Guan 是因为:(一)阳关已成了一个大家熟知的地名(就如北京,照理应该译成the Northern Capital,但我们现在都把它译为Beijing),(二)这样可省去另加注解说它是Border Gate的麻烦。 |

The northern capital is the literal meaning not the name of a certain place (北京) just like the gate located south (which means 阳) of Yuman Gate (the main border gate to the Western Land) is the literal meaning of 阳关.
Due to the literary and social significance of Wang Wei’s poem, 阳关 has been conotated as the farthest place that people would know or could imagine. In my view, you still need to add this footnote to your poem to emphasize the cultural significance of 阳关. I think “to the west of Yang Guan” or “to the west of Yang Gate” would be better. Just a thought. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

It's a translation decision regarding the meaning or pronunciation of a given name of a place. I agree with ericcoliu's conclusion. _________________ East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet. |

Hi 非马
I know you like the verse
西出阳关无故人
But I feel
It is kind of cliche, though you try to use it in a new way.
I like your last verse, the first two, I think you can express in another way. No need to borrow the famous verse.
Chinese traditional poem is very concise and classics, to put here, I feel a little bit awkward. _________________

Thanks, 星子. I needed something old to contrast the new stuff in the last stanza. That was the main reason I used it, though I knew it might be a bit jaded. |

Interesting discussion re the translation of 阳关。 I think each translation has its own merit. However 'Yang Gate' doesn't sound pleasant to my ear. One reason - 'Yang' is based on its pronunciation, while 'Gate' on its meaning. The irregularity of the two translations makes it sound strange to me. If we want to retain both its sound and meaning, this might work 'to the west of Yang Guan Gate' , which I find is also adopted as official translation. |

I don't quite agree the use of 西出阳关无故人 is a cliché, but rather a use of 用典, 古意新用. A contrast of ancient to modern.
I am more grabbed by the sentiment and longing and homesickness conveyed in this poem. In the past, people sent their messages by the ancient moon; whereas in this poem, the speaker's mind is so heavy-laden with nostalgia that not even a satellite can help carry a message. It is a very clever use of 'man-made satellites". |
