Once I Asked a Bird to Sing
he said no, I can’t
and I won’t
it’s not spring
I grasped his neck
and yelled
SING! SING!
WHAT KIND OF BIRD ARE YOU IF YOU DON’T SING
he gasped and struggled
but to the end he did not utter
one single note
I now realize
it really wasn’t his fault
not being a poet
he could not sing
uninspired
but possessed by a burning passion
I insisted on his singing then and there
and did not notice in my hand
spring had expired in agony |

The first two verses made me smile, the speaker's imperative words 'Sing! Sing!' and his action 'grasped his neck and yelled' made the speaker sound like a naughty child. Then the turn took place in the third verse and it finished with a surprise ending.
I can relate this to a writer's block. Then a question comes up -
"not being a poet
he could not sing
uninspired "
Does that mean a poet can write whenever he is asked?
A novel idea in this poem. |

Yes, the irony was intentional. When I wrote this poem, I was really disappointed at some poets who wrote without any literary purpose or inspiration. Some even used writing as a way to gain political favors. Indeed they wrote whenever and whatever they were asked. |

Nowadays, a "poet" becomes a singing bird for his patron while a singing bird is a poet for its Euterpe. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |
