My Solution for The Promotion of Appreciation for Poetry in Canada
I.B. Iskov
A few years ago, I visited several countries in Europe, where poets are honoured with clay busts, large memorials framed in stone and where their words are considered gold.
Venturing back to Canada, I felt cheated, knowing our own brilliant poets are not nearly as highly regarded. Even those poets who win The Governor General Award, or the Giller Prize, are quickly forgotten. Only their slim poetry volumes sport a fancy sticker, to remind everyone that their words are gold.
If you are a struggling poet in Canada, it is extremely difficult and expensive to promote your poetry and have your coveted words perfect bound by a respected poetry press. Most trade book publishers will only consider those poets whose work has been published in high quality literary journals and anthologies and whose work has won a few major poetry contests. If you self-publish your poetry book, promoting it is even harder, since the distribution and sale of poetry books to major book stores is limited in scope and in numbers. The bottom line is, poetry books don’t sell well.
The late Ted Plantos once stated “You are what you eat.” What he meant was, poets need to support each other, buy each other’s books and read each other’s poems. If poets assist each other in this way, then a new viable poetry market opens doors and opportunities for all poets – even the struggling ones.
Back in 1989, I did a little research into poetry organizations which offered memberships.
I couldn’t find one to meet my needs as a nascent writer. I wanted a poetry organization that would offer every member an opportunity to see their words in print. I wanted a poetry organization that would unite poets both on paper, and in person. I wanted a poetry organization that would offer monetary assistance to poor, but talented struggling poets. I wanted a poetry organization which would be poetry-friendly, and offer a place where every member would feel appreciated and their words considered gold. So, I founded this poetry organization – The Ontario Poetry Society. Today T.O.P.S. is a Provincial poetry organization, and has more than 200 members across Canada and USA. Our Mandate is “to provide a poetry-friendly place for everyone. I hope in this way we could help to spread poetry and promote poets.
I wish poets in China and poets in other languages all find their voice to be heard. _________________ ---------------------

I asked I.B. Iskov to write some words for our Chinese poets in China and in Canada to share her experience about promoting poets.
Personally, I.B. Iskov promoted me 3 years ago. My poem first published by her and one year later she recommend me for 2005 Ted Planto Memorial award.
Though she is very busy, she still shares lot of time with others who need help.
Thank you, I.B. Bunny. _________________ ---------------------

Yes, well said. Poets need to support each other, buy each other’s books and read each other’s poems. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |
