Magic Boxes co-written by ericcoliu
They jump into boxes;
then the box defines them
by colour, size, weight, etc.
The box becomes their identity.
If they don’t like their box
they can take a leap of faith,
jump out of the box,
and find or make a new one.
But no matter what kind of box
they jump into,
they have choices:
stay in their box,
think outside the box,
or just leave the box.
Note:
Last summer, I visited my college friend and had a good chat with her over a well-prepared, delicious, "Chinese" dinner. After the meal, we took a walk to a local park where a lot of kids played joyfully. I saw kids playing the “Magic Box” game fanatically, a game that kids can freely jump into and out of boxes of all sorts to form different alliances among them. This poem is my personal reflection on and literary response to the “Magic Box” game. it's co-written by my Kierkegaardian Either/Or type of friend, ericcoliu, whom I met online. _________________ Don't imitate me;

Yes.
In my view, there is another choice:
thinking outside of the box into which one is born . _________________ I'm Champagne,

Yes, one can think out of the box while being in the box. _________________ Don't imitate me;

Good suggestion.
But, can they live outside the box? Are they destined to be "being-in-the-box"? _________________ Don't imitate me;

No to your first question and Yes to your second question.
It's because of the historicity of human existence and of language, which constitutes the "boxness."

Yes, we're being-in-the-box (In Heideggerian terms, being-in-the-world).
As your piece entitled A Question of Be(com)ing Chinese , http://coviews.com/viewtopic.php?t=35495 , stresses,
"Sekky's desperate search for identity points out the pressing need for an understanding of identity which, in Stuart Hall's words, "is able to address people through the multiple identities which they have -- understanding that those identities do not remain the same, that they are frequently contradictory, ... that they tend to locate us differently at different moments." _________________ I'm Champagne,

"Does culture form a net of remembrance, a safety guard against forgetting? Does it provide the individual with at least some clues, some vague outlines, from which to discern his family history? All I have are these doubts and feelings of loss, these questions which pull me on, step after step, and a dance of folly. Over and over, knowing it is futile, I try to create my own myth of history.” David Mura asks a series of poignant questions on identity, culture and history in the concluding paragraphs of his memoir, Turning Japanese, a riveting story of a American Sansei (i.e. a third generation Japanese-American) born and raised in California, who embarks on a trip to Japan with his American wife. _________________ Don't imitate me;

I've revised my piece in an attempt to provoke the reader to think outside the box or to make a new box. _________________ Don't imitate me;

The following are the replies from poets at Poetry Connection:
Excellent! A nice reflection, of course Kierkegaard, went into the box, and forgot it was just a box, and spent the rest of his life describing its dimensions
-- Dr.con
I've never heard of this game but I loved the way you described it. So many possibilites!
-- Fader
Enjoyed the concept, the sadness, and yes, the safe gladness of the truth of your poem.
I was about to say, before I started my response, that probably one of the many reasons why I am a loner, is because I refuse to live in a box, but then it only took a moment, to realise that there are those I choose to be in, and feel safe in.

Thank you for your encouraging comment.

It's because I invented it for the sake of writing a poem on identity politics.
Yes, you're right. So many possibilities stay outside The Magic Box.
We are born into boxes. Our box defines us by gender, color, religion, ethnicity, nationality, and on and on. Sooner or later, we begin to think outside the box.
