Emily Dickinson
American women of Achievement
As age of 19-year-old, Emily Dickinson’s doubts about religion persisted, and she often expressed her torment in verse:
I shall know why—when Time is over—
And I have ceased to wonder why—
Christ will explain each separate anguish
In the fair schoolroom of the sky—
He will tell me what “Peter” promised
And I –for wonder at his woe—
I shall forget the drop of Anguish
That scalds me now – that scalds me Now!
The book “Emily Dickinson (American women of Achievement)” is a good tool to understand Emily’s life and her poems.
Emily was keen to life and nature no matter how much she remained isolated from the world. She passed her days by looking inward and concentrated her energies and intellect on writing. Her poems were intensely emotional. They reflected her struggle of life and religion. She wrote “Faith is such a fine invention” and confessed her decision in letters,
“The shore is safer, Abiah, But I love to buffet the sea… I love the danger”
For better or worse, she had taken an independent stand on the issue of faith.
“It is not now too late, so my friends tell me, so my offended conscience whispers, but it is hard for me to give up the world.”
It took her a few years to settle down her thoughts and struggle between. So many of her poems sway between faith and questions.

We often wonder why on earth we are here. Silence in the air.
In this poem, Emily reveals her angst and frustration, holding on to a belief that “Christ will explain each separate anguish.” The use of hyphens and the final exclamation point show her anguished emotion.
Thanks for posting Dickinson's poem. I like her poetry. _________________ Don't imitate me;

Really? Are we only supposed to know why at the end?
In the last two lines, Dickinson writes:
I shall forget the drop of Anguish
That scalds me now—that scalds me now!”
If she gives up the scalding curiosity and stops asking “why”, in my view, she won’t repeat the phrase “that scalds me now” twice. I think what Dickinson is trying to get at here is that it is human nature to question and to reason, and that it is impossible to suppress this scalding curiosity. So in a sense, ceasing to wonder goes against the grain of what it means to be human. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Hi Eric,
I think what Dickinson is trying to get at here is that it is human nature to question and to reason, and that it is impossible to suppress this scalding curiosity. So in a sense, ceasing to wonder goes against the grain of what it means to be human.
True. In her mind, one voice told her to believe and convert, another voice asked her not to give up.
Today, there still are many questions upon Bible or other religion,
when no answer could be found, they always be answered "Because truth is that or we, as human cannot understand." The hole we were born with is still there and waiting to fill. _________________
