Welcome to Canada.
Name, Chen-ou Liu (phonic)
Country of Birth. R.O.C
Cross out R.O.C. Fill in Taiwan
Place of Birth. Date of Birth. Marital Status ...
Are followed by numerous questions.
The Immigration Officer tries to pin down my borders
He is always looking for shortcuts
More interested in my roadside signposts than
The landscape that carries my journey
The lines he wants me confined to
Are recognizably racialized categories.
Now, you’re legally a landed immigrant
Take one copy of A NEWCOMER’S INTRODUCTION TO CANADA.
Ethnicity
I didn't have an ethnicity
Until I immigrated to Canada.
This Jew, this South Asian, this Arab
This one with a Chinese face
Walking down Spadina to Dundas
I daily face this immigrant,
This man with my own face
Being called Chinese by white Canadians
Mandarin-speaking person in Chinatown
Taiwanese amid people from Hong Kong
Taiwan-centered Chinese among mainland Chinese.
Chinese or Canadian
If I am unavoidably Chinese by descent
I am only sometimes Chinese by consent
When and how is a matter of politics.
If I am legitimately Canadian by legal procedures
I am oftentimes a mere Canadian by multicultural rhetoric
What and where is a matter of choice.
Where Is My Home?
Where is my home?
It is Taipei, Republic of China, aka Taiwan
Where I was born and raised and complained about
Or County of Mount Dragon, Hunan, People’s Republic of China
Where my father came from and I never set foot
Or Beijing, People’s Republic of China
Where I had been indoctrinated about the center of my fatherland
Or Ajax, Ontario, Canada
Where I now live and have a piece of property
Or Toronto, Canada
Where I meet and exchange ideas with people across the globe
Where then is my Home?
My Home is within me
The Journey Home
The passage of immigration is a move away from home to Home
Conjured up as embarking on a pilgrimage
From the geographical location to the spiritual abode.
Whereas the small home remains on the constant move
The home with a capitalized H is erected as a final destination.
Home therefore signifies an eternal pursuit for immigrants
Who always strive to make themselves at home. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul

Thanks for your reading of and commenting on my writing.
Interesting observation. It must be an uncanny sense of humour.
In my daily encounters with "Canadians", the question "Where are you from?" is constantly raised and it challenges my sense of identification with Taiwan, Cultural China, the USA and Canada.
Where Are You from?
On an empowered day, I would describe myself as a permanent resident and hopeful naturalized citizen of Canada with multiple migratory and ancestral reference points in China, Taiwan, and the United States.
On a disempowered day, I am an immigrant from Taiwan not recognized by the UN, constantly questioned by my fellow compatriots about my Taiwanese-ness and unequivocally viewed by “Canadians” as a Chinese, a member of a “visible minority” group, wandering from one place to another in quest of a soul-space to name as Home. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Be Aware of Feeling at Home
We should feel disfavour for all ideals
That might lead one to feel at home
In this fragile, broken time of transition
We ourselves migrants constitute a force
That breaks open ice and other all too thin realities.
It is ok to have roots
As long as you can take them with you. _________________ I'm Champagne,

Moving Home
Home is the place
Where my stories are told.
Writing and telling my stories
I'm moving home.
Like a turtle
Wherever I go
I carry home on my back. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

I carry home on my back?
But that tortoiseshell
makes me breathless.
I’d get rid of it, like
a butterfly
breaking free
from the cocoon
with the spirit to fly.
I read a bothered, unsettled mind in your poems, Eric.
Cheers,
Lake |

Hi! Lake:

You have a particularly sharp eye for reading of my poems.
However, the speaker of my poems is bothered, unsettled not by the tortoiseshell but the historicity and facticity of his identity.
After all, as the turtle pulls in his head, his feet, and his tail, he is home. No matter what inches and inches he roams, when the long day is done, he is always at home.
My Home
Where is my home?
Everywhere and nowhere
You can’t go home again
Why?
Because you are home. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Nomadic Home
We are nomads
Home is invariably mobile
Being portable everywhere
Home is always already there
Being homeless and home-full at once _________________ I'm Champagne,

Living between here and there
You finally decide that you don't live there, and in some ways you don't live here either, so you live between here and there.
Unlike old-timers living in the enclaved Chinese community, you don't have very solid, good old memories of home to fall back on, and they have been constantly mining those memories in their ways of eating, reading, chatting, and in forced silence.
You are not as nostalgic as some of the old-timers might have been. You are relatively new to this city and you are able to make connections with the overseas Chinese communities. You don't yearn for home but for a past, which is a kind of validation of your history. You think you can find in a past that will be beyond the history of your family. It was located somewhere in the consciousness of overseas Chinese people that had to do with being exiled since the 16th century.
The search for a past is crippling you in the present. _________________ I'm Champagne,

My Chinese Mind in Its Canadian Home
Sometimes I dream in Chinese
I dream my father's dream
I wake and become someone else
Rise up
Gaze around walls
Be still for moments
Feel at home here _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Hyphened Identity
Are you Chinese?
Yes.
Really Chinese?
No, I was born in Taiwan.
Are you Canadian?
Yes.
Really Canadian?
Well, you see my skin color.
But I would rather say
No to neither Chinese nor Canadian.
Because the homes I’ve had,
The ways I’ve become.
I would say
Yes twice to your questions.
I am Chinese-Canadian. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |
