Reading is a romantic thing

“Can I help the next one in line, please”
As I walk into the bookstore, I look
At her, my favorite cashier, she ‘d
Always read out the titles of books
I
Brought and says: Yup, this is a good book.

I would spend hours there to hear her say:
“Can I help the next one in line, please”

I shout READING even though it might deafen you
and never say that reading is a romantic thing
for it's hard, a violation
of all laws for the shrinking of people.
I shout READING, counting on the hope
that you'll be in love
with the sound of reading books.

-- tribute to Milton Acorn, author of I shout Love.

It is indeed a romantic encounter. I like such a small talk too when checking out. It reminds me of a conversation at the bookstore:

Cashier: Wow, this book is so thick! 3000 pages! I can never finish it.
Me(blushed): I'm afraid I cannot either.

I am curious to know if there is a reason to single out 'I' in S1.

Should 'says' in S1 be 'say'?

Enjoyed it. Thanks.

here
yes, I am playing with the moods in poetic arrangement a bit. It is of course safe to use 'say'.

she ‘d
Always read out the titles of books -- a habitual behavior
I -- I am unique in receiving treatment from all other customers
Brought and says: Yup, this is a good book. -- 'says' after 'and' here means a result, not connected to 'she'd' , and every time is different as it appears to 'I", though the words appear the same" Yup, this is a good book." that is, 'says' here breaks away from the habitual grammar from I perspective, that's why it is romantic.

well, have fun.

The eternal presence of reading out book titles in the habitually imaginative mind makes reading an incurably romantic thing.

Well, have fun!
