I’ve Tasted My Blood

If this brain’s over-tempered
Consider that the fire was want
And the hammers were fists.
I’ve tasted my blood too much
To love what I was born to.

But my mother’s look
Was a field of brown oats, soft-bearded;
Her voice rain and air rich with lilacs:
And I loved her too much to like
How she dragged her days like a sled over gravel.

Playmates? I remember where their skulls roll!
One died hungry, gnawing grey porch-planks;
One fell, and landed so hard he splashed;
And many and many
Come up atom by atom
In the worm-casts of Europe.

My deep prayer a curse.
My deep prayer the promise that this won’t be.
My deep prayer my cunning,
My love, my anger,
And often even my forgiveness
That this won’t be and be.
I’ve tasted my blood too much
To abide what I was born to.

Hi! Anna:

Having read your Chinese translation Of I’ve Tasted My Blood (hereafter, CTITMB), I had difficulty grappling with the main themes of the CTITMB, especially, the denotational (or connotational) meaning of the first and last paragraphs of the CTITMB.

I think the key point of understanding Milton Acorn’s I’ve Tasted My Blood (hereafter, ITMB) is into what context his poem should be read: devastating consequences of waging wars in Europe or the relentless oppression of the body-crushing capitalist society.

Generally speaking, Milton Acorn, viewed as the People’s Poet, was a social poet, and insisted that his politics informed his poetry. In many of his poems, he vividly depicted the struggle of Canada’s working class.

ITMB, in my view, is representative of Acorn’s poetry in its class analysis, suggestion of surviving in spite of oppression, and use of “I,” himself, as the subject of a case study.

In ITMB, his use of “the tempering process for metals and alloys’ as a metaphor for the body-crushing effects of the capitalist society on humanity, which are vividly captured by the individual hardship (the 2nd paragraph) and the collective suffering (the 3rd paragraph). ITMB is written from Acorn’s personal experience and gives a rare glimpse into the life that shaped the poet-activist.

One more thing about my difficulty reading CTITMB is the “tone” manifested in the last paragraph. In ITMB, echoing the language of the Psalms, especially Psalms written by King David which are structured on David’s tears, cry, and promise to bear the burden of Israel, Acorn voices out his angry love for his “People”.
