My tanka:
the shining moon
that used to perch
on my childhood dreams
now hovers over
a rooming house
has received third place in the 2009 San Francisco International Haiku, Senryu, Tanka, and Rengay Competition sponsored by Haiku Poets of Northern California, and it will also be published in Mariposa.
The contest results have been posted at http://www.hpnc.org/
You can read the winning poems and judges’ comments there.
This award is my rebuttal to those criticisms made by Lake, 博弈, and others.
Many thanks to my readers!
Chen-ou Liu
(The following tanka sequence has been published in the issue No. 9 of Gusts, the official journal of Tanka Canada. I’m overjoyed that this month alone, my tanka have been published in three – Ribbons, Modern English Tanka, and Gusts -- of the Big Four tanka journals.
Now, I’m waiting for good news from American Tanka)

I would say a sense of sabi, which is a recurring theme in Basho’s poetry.
Sabi would be defined as meaning solitary or lonely, referring to a man's state of mind when he is in want of company.

The marked line is the key message behind this tanka.
loneliness --
standing amid the blossoms,
a cypress tree
-- Basho
Is this a good haiku? Basho overtly reveals the main theme explored in his poem. _________________ 舌頭那匹温暖的水獸 馴養地在小小的水族箱中 蠕動

I don’t think this is one of the best of Basho’s haiku.
A great and Western-minded poet Masao Shiki (1867-1902) had launched a scathing attack on Basho in “Chat on Basho,” claiming that “hokku is literature. Renga and haikai are not.” He made a great effort to establish hokku as a new form that stands by itself, and renamed it to haiku.
My take on this is as follows:
standing
amid the blossoms …
a cypress tree _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul |

Poetry in the moment (in the Woolfian sense; if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can read my academic essay, Disrupting Imperial Linear Time: Virginia Woolf's Temporal Perception in To the Lighthouse, if you know how to read one).

This is the most ignorant and arrogant comment I’ve ever read, one which is made by someone who only knows how to spell tanka but has no slightest idea about what tanka is: one of the oldest surviving verse forms.
Again, if you can read books, please find yourself Modern Japanese Tanka by Makoto Ueda. By the way, do you know who Makoto Ueda is?
Maybe you forgot to read my headnote or you have no slightest idea about what “a poet to be” means. In terms of poetry writing, I’m a published tankarist and poet.
Where are yours? Do you have any?

Read my innovative poems, i HEAR Calliope Humming?! (wordless poem; by the way, do you know how to read such an innovative poem? LOL!) and Calligraphy of Geese (shape poem), which now is recommended by a poetry editor for publication in Kyoto Journal, one of the most influential Asian American Journals.
Where are yours? Do you have any?

this is an honest advice to you, did not know you would read it this way. in my view you are not a poet yet, matters not how many times published (how easily that can be done!) the point i want to make is why not something yourself? i never liked writers who copy, neither new or old and one thing for sure (how dare you) I know nothing about tanka! _________________ Sometimes I am busy

thanks for pointing to your better posts, but, all i see still copy, copy copy, I have seen others done those and better. why not something yourself? the point is as an enthusiastic moderator which you are you should promote not you, but the essence of poetry, and to my taste, better original or innovative which i see greatly missing in your works. get it? i may be the one speaks out, don't under estimate readers. also. my advice is no more tanka, please, create your own, poet. _________________ Sometimes I am busy

Before I open my mouth to criticize the tanka written by other people, I read, study, write, re-write, and get my tanka published.
In my humble opinion, this is the way of being a tankarist.
博弈 写到: |

No one asks you to read. By the way, do you know how to read a good tanka? Have you studied tanka before?
All of my tanka have been published in the Big four tanka journals (if you know the English tanka world). They are not great tanka but good enough to be published. Show me yours. Do you have any?
By the way, you never answered any of my questions. _________________ Time is nothing but a disquiet of the soul

well, another head, just don't get it
i think for haiku or tanka, it's like a quick come
for people with no creativity yet wanting a fame
masturbating themselves in a 5 by 7 room and then
by George or Hiroshima, all comes, at the same time
(go figure this one out)
for a Chinese ethnic poet, why promote that new found "American Tankii"
as if it is something really reborn and worth while, can't you be
more creative without them? to be a copycat (you could also do
American Katauta, or Choka), might as well develop...
say, ’American 词‘, ‘American 绝‘, there is no originality to
reinventing those artificial things with language make-ups, or labeled such
and who are these American Tankists
who can claim they are poets, English Tankaist at most if they write well.
granted, knowing them as a school of poetry and able to appreciate them is good,
just like 'reinventing' other types of ancient poetics;
what i see here is an intentional promotion of your own published little poems,
to an unbalanced degree, and who gives a Defg!
then referring to " Show me your published English poems",
what a snobbery idiot! _________________ Sometimes I am busy

A nationalist view of poetry!
Ericcoliu, from now on, please read that little red book. Professor 博弈 has no slightest idea about how tanka (the modern name for waka) now is becoming one of the most popular and versatile short forms of poetry in English.

Bravo! This line has a dual meaning, cultural (Chinese idiom not idiot) and biological (ox's poor eyesight).

Such "innovative" lines.
Maybe next time the failed poet will use F words.

As for ericcoliu's tanka, in my humble opinion, tanka I is too abstract, in which you try too hard to pack so many unresolved feelings into a few words.
I like tanka III the most. _________________ If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all. |

Anyone can become angry. That is easy. But
to be angry with the right person, to the right
degree, at the right time, for the right purpose
and in the right way... that is not easy.
-- Aristotle.
To practice angry poetry is to let the fingers do the
Good while risking being wronged. There are innocent,
Such, heads claim to be poets yet yelling me a failed poet;
“What do they know about poetry anyway”, you said,
I laughed for they must have thought I had been a poet.
I can see holes in his mouth, and thinking:
do I want to save his breath before his teeth drag
his tongue-cuts out?
And they think they deserve an F word easily.
F is for flowers, grow upwards with a root in mother soils.
What do they know about F, anyway, fuck says.
Well, almost amusing, but not quite yet.
