Shape the fear, Make a difference

Are you sweating when being asked to toast for a wedding couple?
Are you forgetting your words when doing your presentation?

Are you, are you?
It happened to me… and to most of you too.

Why? Because of the fear, the fear to public speaking. The fear to speak in front of public place.

How many of you desire to get out of the fear?
How many of you want to have a change?

Please raise your hands. Great. Many if not all of you want to be "fearless" . The bad news is we cannot get rid of the fear. We are not born as speakers . We are not. The fear will always remain. But the good news is you have all come to the right place. A place to shape your fear, make a difference.

Mr. Toastmaster, fellow toastmaster and welcome guests, two years ago I attended the Toastmaster international humor speech contest by chance. It really surprised me.
It was a huge success. There were 7 powerful contestants. They all made wonderful and powerful speeches . But the most impressive person in my eye is not the winner. It is the runner up. A young Chinese man, a contestant with the same background as me, English as his second language, stood there to compete. I could picture myself trembling and mute if I were there. Mr Young, the Chinese man made a change for himself, and also made a change for me.
Because before I always thought English was the impossible barrier standing in the way of success, for chinese immigrants.
But Mr. Young broke the barrier, proved his legend. So I asked myself, how, how do I make the change ?

Young's secret was the toastmaster club. He said he had joined the club for two years. It really made a huge success for him.
A week later, I visit this toastmaster club.

I remember as a guest, some toastmaster asked my comments. I immediately replied I wanted to join, I wanted to improve my English. They kindly reminded me," Toastmaster is to improve your public speaking. Focus on how to present and communicate with an audience. How to use different skills to convey your view and enhance your points. It is not an English class to improve your language". right. They made their points.

Today as I stand here, I see what they mean. I have completed 10 speeches. Each one had its own objective, focused on a specific skill required by a good speaker.
For example, one project may be working on your voice volume control; another may enhance your body language. Some work on your structure and research, others may work on visual tools. It breaks down to different details and length. Prepare ,Practice and perfect. Beside the printed material guide line, we also have a mentor assigned to work with you before your speech. After your speech, we have the evaluators to share their thoughts and suggestions for you to improve.

I received great mentorship before hand and wonderful encouragement and evaluation afterwards. It really creates a healthy, warm and good mood to move on.

A speech now is fun, the fear is shaped as the energy and exciting part, it turns to a wonderful event for me.

I get the very valuable suggestions, such as slow down, and don't skip the last sound .

I also remember one lovely member here got her valuable suggestion is to remove her glasses, don't look down. you see, some personal style is our great strength, with a little improvement, a huge difference.

As we keep on practising and participating , the fear lessens and lessens . We gain more confidence. Now imagine one day we are on the big stage, a big conference, do the same as the contestant did .

That is not too far to go, that is not difficult to do as today we continue to shape our fear and make a difference.

A good speech. I am just wondering will "channel" be a better word to use instead of "shape". You are talking about turning fear into energy, right?

Good speech and good point.

Everyone needs a start in speech if s/he hopes to be publicly heard, not only read. However, the fear has to be shaken off first. The Toastmaster Club provides both effective speech practising and fear-shaking environments.
----------------
"Shape the fear, Make a difference"
How about "shake the fear"?
"shake" means "shake off, throw off" .
"channel" means "move something from one place to another", there's no indication of the change of the state of "something".

-----------------

By the way, 星子, do you mind me making a few comments on some other uses of words or structures in your speech?

I had thought of "shake the fear" too. Then I noticed that the author was talking about "the fear is shaped as the energy and exciting part, it turns to a wonderful event for me. " and suggested the use of the word "channel". But I agree "shake" would be a better word in this case.
