Haiku
Usually the first verse has 5 syllables, the second verse has 7 syllables, and the third verse has 5 syllables. The first verse sets the image up. The second verse elaborates on the first verse. The third verse finishes off by completely surprising you. |

Pantoum
The Pantoum is a poem built up of quatrains. The second and fourth verses of your first stanza become the first and third verses of your second stanza. The second and fourth verses of your second stanza become the first and third verses of your third stanza. This pattern continues until you reach the last stanza of your poem. Finally, the first and third verses of your first stanza are used as the second and fourth verses of your last stanza. |

Rondeau
A famous Canadian Rondeau is the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae. The Rondeau has thirteen octosyllabic verses (???) right. Each verse has eight syllables. The first four syllables of the first verse are repeated twice: once after the eighth verse and again after the thirteenth verse. The first four syllables of the first verse must be able to stand alone as a refrain. The rythming scheme for the Rondeau is A A B B A A A B R A A B B A R.
In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army
IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields. |
