“Variegated” is a collection of short poems and haiku by Alice Dicker Liberman. It deals with an aged wife’s daily recurring concerns with her agonizing feelings. Although the aging process, sickness and death become too painful to write about, Ms. Liberman shows us her courage to write on those heavy topics. As a reader I cannot help nod and sigh when reading her sharp feeling “winter’s unwelcome guest/rudely attacks weary bones/pray do not overstay”. Sometimes, she contrasts natural’s purity with the lack of humanity in real life: “After fresh snow falls/heavy footprints stomp through/ no longer pure white”. Among her silent longings, she calls upon spring: “winter dream of spring/realized when buds awaken/love blooms once again”. The poem titled “The Cardiologist” makes me laugh, yet sad at the same time. “I examined you/examining me/and found you to be/lacking…/heart-wise”. Through many inevitable life experiences, such as “darkness closes in/funereal black pervades/the death of today” and “a colorful envelope/containing nothing inside/message not received”, she still sees and sings the beauty of the natural world where “leaves waltz with the wind/gowned in reds, yellows and greens/to heady fall tunes”, and “Rock candy coated branches/sparkling in the sunlight/gently stirred by a light fall wind/bereft of all your vibrant color/still beautiful to see”. This collection of poems are the glimmering dewdrops and tiny pearls from Ms. Liberman’s life as she claims: “Breathing body stilled/ a strong heart that would not quit /busy world goes on”.
