Welcome Lunch 12:30 p.m.
Official launch of LCP Annual Poetry Festival and Conference 2014
Following the Magazines Canada/MagNet Conference morning workshops the LCP will host a welcome lunch for conference registrants, which includes the official opening celebration and a special welcome from our own Toronto Poet Laureate and long time member, George Elliott Clarke.

Joseph Sherman Memorial New Members Reading 2:00 p.m.
A reading by League of Canadian Poets’ newest members, all welcome.

Music Evoked Imagery Workshop with Mary Rykov 3:00 p.m.
Music-evoked imagery (MEI) is a music-centred exploration of consciousness derived from pioneering music therapy research. During MEI dyadic sessions, various imagery forms — visual, auditory, sensory, memory, movement — are experienced when listening to music in an altered state of consciousness while dialoguing with a trained facilitator.

We will explore how MEI stimulates creative process. The history of MEI will be explained, and session components will be described. We will engage with music and discuss the effects of group MEI for its potential to stimulate poetry. Although music can elicit creativity, the poet must then accomplish the heavy lifting of acquiring skill and honing craft.

Feminist Caucus Business Meeting 4:00 p.m.

Anne Szumigalski Lecture and Reception 5:00 p.m.
The Anne Szumigalski Lecture Series, proposed by Regina poet Paul Wilson in 2001 and approved by the League’s National Council the same year, commemorates the award winning Saskatchewan poet, who died a few years earlier. The lecture series was modeled after the Margaret Laurence series of lectures by distinguished Canadian writers, long held as part of the Writers’ Union of Canada’s annual general meetings.

Anne Szumigalski (1922-1999) was a poet, essayist, translator and playwright. After serving with the Red Cross as an interpreter during World War II, Szumigalski immigrated to Canada in 1951 and lived in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She was a founder of both the Saskatchewan and Manitoba Writers Guilds, and helped establish the literary magazines, Grain and Prairie Fire.

Anne Szumigalski won the 1995 Governor General’s Award for Poetry for Voice. She was also a mentor to numerous prairie poets and much loved in the literary community, especially in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The Anne Szumigalski Lecture in 2014 will be presented by Toronto-based poet Lillian Allen.

Bio: Lillian Allen is a Creative Writing Professor at the OntarioCollege of Art & DesignUniversity in TorontoCanada. Allen emerged from the grassroots in the seventies to become a leading influential figure on the Canadian cultural landscape.

She is an award winning and internationally renowned poet. As one of its lead originator and innovators, she has specialized in the writing and performing of dub poetry, a new genre of English Literature which is a highly politicized form of poetry preferring a black aesthetic and specific cultural codification. Dub poetry is a poetic form, which stylizes vernacular language, the emotive quality and inherent musicality of words and is sometimes set to music. It is considered a literary godmother of rap, hip-hop and spoken word poetry.

Allen is responsible for opening up the form to insist and engrave feminist content and sensibilities. Professor Allen has published several books and recordings, and has worked in poetry, fiction, non-fiction, writing for children, experimental writing forms, and has written several plays. Her work also appears in a variety of media. She has spent almost four decades writing, publishing, and performing her work in Canada, The US, Europe, and England and elsewhere

Saturday, June 7
Annual General Meeting: 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Panel: Concepts of ‘North’ (Saturday 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.)
Moderator: Clea Roberts
Panelists:TBC
Arc Poetry recently published an issue that focused on the North, in all its permutations. The audience will be hearing from northern poets, and also southern poets who have thoughts on the North, how Canada being the “true North” informs our national literature or how the North has impacted them in their practice .There seems to be a real national longing/interest for the North lately and we are interested in attempting to articulate where some of this longing/interest comes from: what does North represent physically and aesthetically and how does our perspective as northerners or southerners impact our craft? This panel will engage poets that were featured in Arc’s issue on North to expand on the poetic and/or theoretical work they presented.

Panel: Technology and Poetry Now (Saturday 3:15-4:15 p.m.)
Moderator: Ayesha Chatterjee
Panelists: Noah Genner, President and CEO of BookNet Canada, Natalie Zina Walschots
Digital publishing and Social Media are both environments that are really adaptable to making poetry more available to the public, in addition to the straight forward promotional opportunities they provide. Social media is also a platform for creative expression.

This panel will include a speaker on e-publishing and web-based publishing, where they will cover issues such as ownership on Facebook and other social media, as well as new opportunities for poets through digital media, and various manuscript management software (such as Scrivener).

This panel cover hands-on social media instruction for promoting members’ poetry. Questions, such as “do Facebook and Twitter or other social media platforms “own” what I post”, and “what are some tips and tricks on creating events and advertising related to Facebook”, etc. will be answered by experts. Participants will also be encouraged to bring their electronic devices so that they can learn hands-on.

Panel: Feminist Caucus Panel (Saturday 4:15-5:15 p.m.)
Panelists: Magie Dominic, contributor and panel organizer; Anne Burke, Feminist Caucus Chair and Alberta Poet and Editor, awarded Alberta Centennial Medal, Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Award and Diamond Jubilee Award; Susan McMaster, Past President of the League of Canadian Poets.

Stories about the forgotten elders, our vulnerable elders – which prompted the panel topic, tentatively subtitled poetry and cautionary tales.

Awards Presentations and Dinner 5:30 p.m.
Saturday will conclude with an awards gala dinner announcing the winners of the Pat Lowther, Gerald Lampert and Raymond Souster Memorial Awards. This year will be extra-special as the League of Canadian Poets will be presenting the Sheri-D Golden Beret Award for the first time. The award will honour a Canadian spoken word artist who has made a substantial contribution to the development of spoken word, through the originality and excellence of his or her own writing/performance works, and through involvement in—and contributions to—the expansion of the spoken word community.

Members of the National Council will also present the three LCP membership awards: Life Member Award, Honourary Member Award, and the Colleen Thibaudeau Outstanding Contribution Award. The Honorary and Life Membership Awards are conferred as a mark of distinction and appreciation for special achievements and contributions to the art of poetry. The Colleen Thibaudeau Outstanding Contribution Award was established in memory of the late poet and honourary member Colleen Thibaudeau (1925-2012).This award has been created by the League of Canadian Poets and the poet’s family to honour and recognize a substantial volunteer project or series of projects that significantly nurture and support poets and poetry across Canada.

Sunday, June 8 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Members are invited to the annual book launch. The launch will be hosted by Ayesha Chatterjee and held at the LCP offices at 192 Spadina Avenue, Suite 312. Light refreshments will be available. If you are a member and attending the conference and would like to launch your new title please email [email protected].
