The Jessamy Stursberg Poetry Contest for Canadian Youth was named in memory of a family member of a League of Canadian Poet donor who had an abiding love for poetry. This popular annual award is juried by members of the League of Canadian Poets and offer cash prizes and student memberships to winning and honourable mention poets in both junior and senior categories.
ANNUAL DEADLINE: January 15
There are two age categories:
Junior (Grades 7 – 9)
Senior (Grades 10 ‐ 12)
Winning poems in each category receive cash prizes:
1st Place: $350
2nd Place: $300
3rd Place: $250
All winning poems are published in the League of Canadian Poets’ e‐zine Re:Verse, receive a Jessamy Stursberg Poetry Contest for Canadian Youth certificate, a book by a full member and a student membership for one year.
Entry Guidelines:
•
All submissions should be sent by e‐mail to [email protected] with the subject Jessamy Stursberg Poetry Contest for Canadian Youth.
•
There are two age categories: Junior, grades 7 – 9 and Senior, grades 10 – 12
•
Poems must be previously unpublished and must be original work.
•
Length of each poem submitted must not exceed 50 lines. Limit 2 poems per poet.
•
Each submission should include the poet’s name, address, and phone number, age, grade, name of school, and the titles of the poems entered.
•
Poems should not be sent as attachments, but as plain text files in the body of the message.
There is no entry fee.
Winners will be announced during Young Poet’s Week in April and posted on the League of Canadian Poets’ websites www.poets.ca and www.youngpoets.ca. Announcements will be sent to the media, and the winners will be notified by mail and email.
Copyright remains with the poet. Winners will be asked for the first rights to publish their work. Should an entry be published elsewhere during the course of the contest, we ask that the entrant notify the LCP immediately. Revisions on any poem will not be accepted after it has been entered. All decisions of the jury are final. Contest is open to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants. Members of the LCP’s National Council, staff or the contest judges or their families are not eligible to enter these competitions.

The Young Poets website is a project of the League of Canadian Poets. The www.youngpoets.ca team offers a number of initiatives for youth and teachers across Canada.
The website also offers resources for teachers. You’ll find workshop ideas, poetry teaching links, and resources. You’ll also find a forum especially for teachers where they can share ideas, questions, and theories.
Re:Verse, the e‐zine
Poetry and writing by young Canadians (ages 13 – 18 ) is showcased in this quarterly e‐zine. This online publication is a unique platform for featuring new and exciting voices. Visit www.youngpoets.ca
Poets in the Schools – Ontario Only
The League of Canadian Poets distributes funds to poets to visit classrooms across the province of Ontario. Each poet brings an individual style and approach to the classroom. Lessons can include a variety of methods, from readings to workshops, dub, spoken word and performance poetry to a combination of several styles.
The League of Canadian Poets shares the cost of the visit with the school. Visit www.poets.ca for more information
