TTQ – In your opinion, what constitutes a good poem?

Allan Briesmaster – Good poems come in all shapes, sizes, flavours and colours. The real test of a poem’s merit is whether it stays fresh and strong indefinitely, no matter how many times it’s read. Often that has to do with a layered complexity that keeps on yielding revelations over time, as the reader matures and changes. But then too, many great poems have very simple wording. The common factor must be that the “good poem” has everything going for it that it wants, and nothing else to impede or dilute its quality. It can operate simultaneously, to varying extents, as a tale in miniature, as a compact drama, and as a matrix of sounds and rhythms. It unites thought with feeling, and illuminates its contents with imaginative vision. It releases more energy than the reader puts in. It has a pleasing architecture that transforms into a lens, opening beyond itself toward the unutterable. (That’s my opinion, anyway – and there are also plenty of texts I enjoy and admire that don’t fit those criteria.)
