GLITZ, GLAMOUR AND PRESTIGE AT THE 2013 MARTY AWARDS!
MISSISSAUGA, ON- The Mississauga Arts Council (MAC) is set to present an evening of glitz, glamour, and prestige at the 2013 MARTY Awards on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at the Hammerson Hall of the Living Arts Centre (located at 4141 Living Arts Drive). Produced by MAC, the MARTYS are the pinnacle of excitement and publicity for Mississauga's thriving arts community. The red carpet will kick off at 6:30 p.m., along with avec delicious hors d'oeuvres and LIVE streaming courtesy of Live Eye Media. The live feed will be hosted by local Mississauga artist, singer/songwriter and 2013 MARTY Award nominee, Sarah-Jean Villa and will be available in real time at www.livestream.com/mississaugalive. There will also be a plethora of media conducting interviews with all the nominees. The group, Marielba, Eduardo & Greg will be playing their Spanish ballades during the reception.
The award show will start at 8 p.m. and feature an exhilarating lineup of entertainment, including the Johnny Max Band, jazz sensation the Alma Quartet, the Con Brio Singers, the Cawthra Dance Ensemble, and Zohra Zoberi together with Vibonics, performing a creative act contrasting forms of spoken word with poetry. The presentation is called, Internal Flame. Traditional poetry recital and rap music will merge, submerge and emerge as a unique form of word art- to deliver a powerful message to all. Local musician, Kyle Fraser will serenade guests at the VIP after party.
The MARTY Awards celebrate the artistic achievements of the city's established artists while encouraging and supporting emerging artistic talent. The MARTYS have been described as an important launch for many Mississauga artists' careers. Past finalists and winners have moved on to find their place in the international artistic community. This year there are a grand total of 91 artists in the running for the awards. The caliber of artistic talent is exceptional. Categories include emerging and established literary arts, media arts, performing and performing group arts, visual arts, as well as the creative community award. The Laurie Pallett Patron of the Arts Award and the Volunteer of the Year Award will also be recognized with a unique award presentation. The People's Choice Award will also be presented the evening of the ceremony. This year, the artistic style of the trophies, designed by local Mississauga ceramic artist, Jolanta Jung are like you've never seen them before!

LEADING ARTISTS AWARDED TOP HONOURS AT 2013 MARTY AWARDS!
MISSISSAUGA, ON – Tonight, the Living Arts Centre turned into a melting pot of art and expression as leading artists were honoured for their outstanding contribution to the evolution of the arts scene in Mississauga at the 2013 MARTY Awards, organized by the Mississauga Arts Council (MAC). It was a night that saw both new and established artists showered with praise, recognition and media attention.
"The MARTYS are a celebration of art," exclaimed Linda Thomas, MAC Executive Director. "It is an honour and a privilege to have such talented artists as recipients of the MARTY Awards. Everyone is a winner today and I would encourage all the nominees to be a part of next year's celebrations."
The event was filled with excitement and anticipation as the winners were announced from a roster of 91 extremely talented nominees. One of the winners this year is local comedian and actor Tristan Barrocks, who also hosted the show and won in the categories of Emerging Media Arts and Emerging Performing Arts Group. His production company, World Made Flesh (WMF) took the top spot. Other high profile winners included: internationally acclaimed musician, Tom Barlow; Cow Over the Moon Children's Theatre, known for their innovative performances; well known author and critic Keith Garebian; talented filmmaker, Alvin Campaña; and upcoming television artist, Austin MacDonald.
The MARTYS awarded a grand total of $11,000 in the categories of literary, performing, media, creative community and visual arts. 10 artists also received honourable mentions. Winners received a cash prize and extensive recognition from the media and community at large.
Artists walked the carpet and mingled with numerous art connoisseurs and media, who covered the event. Following the red-carpet launch, MARTYS host, Tristan Barrocks conducted the award ceremony with a fresh new twist and included thousands of MAC fans on social media platforms into the celebration. The audience enjoyed performances by the Johnny Max Band, the Alma Quartet, the Con Brio Singers, the Cawthra Dancers, Vibonics and Zohra Zoberi, along with other outstanding performers.
