Reading and Writing: Life on the Page
Such is the Road I Have Traveled
ahead, two roads diverged
in the dim woods --
the journey was long
arriving at the fork
once again, I chose the road less traveled --
déjà vu
as the journey continues
I walk it fearlessly --
eternal return

Indeed, your journey has been long and difficult in terms of writing in an adopted language, and, in my view, it well reflects the journey of many participants here.
Be the way, what do you really mean by "eternal return?"

Originally, eternal return has roots in ancient Egypt, and later it is revived by Friedrich Nietzsche and he makes it a central concept to his writings. Walter Kaufmann suggests that Nietzsche may have encountered this idea in the works of Heinrich Heine, who once wrote:
“Time is infinite, but the things in time, the concrete bodies, are finite. They may indeed disperse into the smallest particles; but these particles, the atoms, have their determinate numbers, and the numbers of the configurations which, all of themselves, are formed out of them is also determinate. Now, however long a time may pass, according to the eternal laws governing the combinations of this eternal play of repetition, all configurations which have previously existed on this earth must yet meet, attract, repulse, kiss, and corrupt each other again...”
Nietzsche calls the idea "horrifying and paralyzing", and says that its burden is the "heaviest weight" imaginable:
“What, if some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: 'This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more.”
However, Nietzsche never speaks about the reality of "eternal recurrence" itself, but about the "thought of eternal recurrence". In my poem, the narrator “fearlessly” confronts the “reality of eternal return.”

Yes, thanks for your close reading.
This novel centers on Nietzsche's idea of eternal return and Kundera plays with it by offering a counterargument: each of us has only one life to live and what happens once will never occur again. He calls this idea "lightness" as opposed to Nietzsche's eternal return as the "heaviest weight."

Such is the Road I Have Traveled, an expanded version of my reply to your poem, is written in response to hahaview's reply to my post:
“For me the road keeps forking and forking and forking no matter what path is taken. guess that is just life.”
and to the key theme explored in Milan Kundera’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being.
