I’m honored to receive a short poem sequence by my poet friend, Rodney L. Eisenbrandt, in response to my own sequence,S e x, Love, and Something in Between, Part I:

Adoring
capsules
of blue

II

Sheath
loves
shield

III

Last night’s
decadence
morning pill


Below is my second short poem sequence, in which two of “blue pill” poems are in response to Rodney’s engrossing poem:

Sketches from the Floating World: S e x, Love, and Something in Between, Part II

Alone in bed --
she hears her cat's
piercing cry.

Awkward moment --
he forgets where
his blue pills are.

Choose a fitting bra --
when did his eyes
replace hers?

Buy a tailored suit --
the same old style
his mother chose for him.


VI

Unchanged Barbie faces –-
she has no choice, except
to grow old over time.

The morning greeting gone --
he buys blue pills
to entertain.

3 The blue pill is a nickname for Viagra, is a popular drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. It is produced and presented as blue tablets by Pfizer Inc.

Below is the reply from my poet friend, Emusing:

"I wonder, do the pills here counter the pills in Rod's theory of the chemical existence? Is viagra swapped for Prozac? Where does the spirit fit in? Just thinking out loud. I wish I had time to be a corner in a triangle on this topic as it's one close to my heart."

Below is my reply to her question:

I think the essence of the issue discussed here is not about what kinds of pills per se, but the thinking model behind selling and buying pills to solve problems or pursue happiness, one which adopts a “redunctionist approach” to deal with the human condition. In the case of the “magic blue pill,” it’s about the pursuit of happiness (except that someone really has erectile dysfunction).

In her recent book entitled The Happiness Myth, Jennifer Michael Hecht, author of award-winning books of philosophy, history, and poetry, discusses the history of the idea of happiness, and various ways that people, across time and space, have sought happiness. By looking at the human history critically, Hecht stirs up new ways of thinking to re-imagine the way American society, in its pursuit of happiness, uses happiness drugs, money and shopping, news and vigils, refusal of exercise, and television culture.

By the way, to my best knowledge, the U.S.A. is the only nation enshrining “the pursuit of happiness” in its Constitution. The reality on this Promised Land of Happiness is the consumption of a half of psychiatric drugs produced worldwide by its population only made up of around 5 percent of humanity on earth.
